In an interview on Aniplex’s After Hours program hosted by Sally Amaki on May 10, 2024, Solo Leveling producer Sota Furuhashi discussed exciting developments for the upcoming season 2 of the anime.
Furuhashi revealed that while season 1 primarily focused on the protagonist’s personal growth and journey, season 2 will broaden its narrative scope to include more development of supporting characters.
The first season of Solo Leveling, which aired from January 7 to March 31, 2024, they predominantly depicted the main character’s evolution.
Solo Leveling Anime Season 2 Expectations
Furuhashi acknowledged this continuation into season 2 but emphasized that viewers can anticipate a deeper exploration of supporting characters who have assisted the protagonist throughout his journey. This shift in focus will provide fans with a more comprehensive understanding of the Solo Leveling universe.
Furuhashi emphasized the significance of spotlighting side characters, suggesting that their backstories and contributions will be elaborated upon in season 2. By delving into the lives of these supporting figures, the anime aims to present a more holistic view of its world.
Regarding the anime’s production and distribution, Solo Leveling is produced by A-1 Pictures and has been well-received globally.
Crunchyroll, the streaming platform, has made the series available across multiple regions including North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and others. Additionally, Medialink has licensed the series for distribution in Southeast Asia and Oceania.
The success of Solo Leveling stems from its origin as a South Korean web novel written by Chugong, serialized on Kakao’s digital platform KakaoPage starting in July 2016. The popularity of the web novel led to a webtoon adaptation illustrated by Jang Sung-rak (Dubu), which concluded its first season in 2020 and its second season in 2021.
The anime’s second season, titled “Arise from the Shadow,” promises to expand the narrative boundaries established in season 1.
Furuhashi’s comments during the interview suggest that fans can look forward to a more nuanced exploration of the Solo Leveling universe, with supporting characters taking center stage alongside the protagonist’s continued development.
