Shogakukan Accused of Secretly Reinstating Convicted Manga Author

Japan’s manga industry has been shaken by a major controversy involving author Shouichi Yamamoto and publisher Shogakukan. The situation has escalated beyond an individual criminal case into a broader debate about transparency, corporate ethics, and institutional responsibility within one of Japan’s most influential publishing companies. Here’s what Manga One had to say about it.

Shouichi Yamamoto is a manga writer who previously worked as a part-time teacher. He gained industry recognition for his series Daten Sakusen. However, his career took a serious turn in 2020 when he was arrested and convicted under Japan’s Child Pornography Prohibition Act for sexually abusing a 15-year-old high school student who had been under his supervision.

Court documents state that the abuse occurred between 2016 and 2019. The legal process concluded with a summary indictment and a fine of 300,000 yen.

Following his arrest, Daten Sakusen was quietly discontinued. At the time, Shogakukan characterized the issue as a private matter, without publicly disclosing the criminal nature of the case. That limited explanation has since become a focal point of public criticism.

The controversy intensified in February 2026 when the Sapporo District Court ordered Yamamoto to pay 11 million yen in damages to the victim.

Court findings revealed that the survivor developed severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) as a result of the abuse. The renewed attention to the case triggered widespread anger online and within the manga community.

Further scrutiny emerged after it became known that Yamamoto had resumed publishing in 2022 under the pen name Ichiro Hajime. Under this alias, he worked on a new series titled Joujin Kamen, which was distributed through Shogakukan’s platforms.

Reports indicate that the project proceeded under the supervision of the same editorial department. The illustrator, Eri Tsuruyoshi, was reportedly unaware of Yamamoto’s past conviction at the time of collaboration.

The revelation that a convicted author had been permitted to re-enter the industry under a different name led to accusations that Shogakukan had effectively shielded him. Critics argued that readers, collaborators, and the broader creative community were not adequately informed.

On February 27, 2026, Shogakukan released a public statement acknowledging serious lapses in judgment. The company admitted that Yamamoto should not have been rehired and announced the suspension of Joujin Kamen in both digital and print formats. It also stated that an internal review committee would be established to examine how the decision had been made.

The fallout has extended beyond the publisher. Several prominent manga creators voiced dissatisfaction with the handling of the matter, with some calling for independent oversight mechanisms to strengthen industry safeguards. A number of artists temporarily suspended their own series in protest, and social media campaigns have demanded structural reforms within Japan’s publishing system.

The case now stands as a defining moment for the manga industry, raising questions not only about individual wrongdoing but also about editorial accountability, transparency in corporate decision-making, and the ethical standards expected from major cultural institutions.
