Prime Video’s upcoming docuseries on the ultra-conservative Christian group Institute for Basic Life Principles covers the rise of the group led by Bill Gothard and the well-kept secrets of those that had to live under those statutes, shedding light on the 2014 accusations against Gothard for sexual misconduct and harassment, particularly from the viewpoints of one of Gothard’s followers, the well-publicized and media savvy Duggar family, whose show on TLC “19 Kids & Counting” showcased the lives of Jim Bob, his wife Michelle and their nineteen children, whose lives were depicted there.
One of the key aspects that the four-part docuseries will cover is the sexual misconduct and molestation charges filed against the eldest son of the Duggar family, Josh Duggar, who apparently engaged in illicit sexual behavior with underage girls, including four of his sisters. Following those accusations, and coupled with the Gothard case, the Duggar family show was eventually canceled. The docu-series aims to explore those issues from the vantage points of those who lived around them.
Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets Preview
This series pretends to expose the secrets behind Bill Gothard’s teachings. Bill Gothard created the Institute in Basic Life Principles, a radical Christian organization devoted to families and child-rearing that emphasizes Bible teachings, homeschooling, male dominance, female submission, and conservative values. Gothard started this in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, his popularity was in full bloom. One of the most exemplary families that followed Gothard’s teachings was the Duggars, the family explored in this docuseries.
Still, it covered a long story of well-kept secrets that eventually surfaced in the 2010s when a group of former members of the Institute in Basic Life Principles filed a series of complaints against Bill Gothard, accusing him of harassment and sexual misconduct towards female employees and volunteers within the Institute. While the investigation discovered no criminal malfeasance or misconduct on Gothard’s part, it did shine a light on his inappropriate demeanor. This docuseries aims to give voice to the testimony of those affected by the man and his teachings.
