The Plot Of Shantaram:
Shantaram is the story of an Australian man named Lindsay (Lin). After his personal life causes him to be sentenced to a long, unpleasant prison term, he escapes and heads for Bombay (Mumbai) with a fake passport. A man named Prabaker (a happy-go-lucky taxi driver) befriends Lin, and through a series of events, he ends up living in Prabaker’s slum.
Lin becomes a part of the lively culture in Mumbai, befriends people who live in slums and helps them fight fires and monsoons, and provides free medical care to make up for his past wrongdoings. Mumbai mafia chief Khader Khan eventually takes Lin under his wing. The Mumbai Don (mafia boss) recruits Lindsay to launder money and forego passports for his clinic. Lindsay falls in love with India but also experiences heartbreak while finding love, redemption, and a purpose.
He spends time in the company of mafia bosses, drug dens, and in a tiny Indian village where he gains the name Shantaram. Khader fills the role of a loving father in Lin’s mind, something he never had. His connection to the organization eventually led him from a life of love and freedom to running guns in Afghanistan and then the realization of his own treachery and ultimate inner salvation.
Shantaram Episode 3 “Strange Bedfellows” Recap:
When Lin had the opportunity to escape Bombay, he decided to stay and help Karla and the locals. He ministers to the fire’s victims that same night. Many are burnt, and one woman, Lakshmi, even dies from the flames. Lin blames himself for the death as well as all the pain and suffering he has caused in Prabhu’s neighborhood.
He vows to the right these wrongs by using Karla’s money to rebuild the shacks and buy supplies so he can treat the ill people. By drumming up business, Prabhu creates a cue outside of his home. Lin wants to help people and has accepted a position as the local doctor, which he is perfect for. At present, Khader is visiting Walid. He tells his enemy that Rujul is deceased.
Given a chance, Walid would kill the traitor himself. Although Khader speaks of peace between the two sides, he believes Walid is beginning a war. Walid is completely honest with Khader– he wants to own Sagar Wada because the land is worth a small fortune. He argues that he made a more substantial bid and deserves the land. His rivals don’t seem ready to back down from their positions either.
Khader’s next stop after meeting with Walid is the Palace, where he’ll interrogate Madame Zhou. If Zhou wants to stay safe in her neighborhood, she has to remain neutral toward the gangs. Zhou admits that by bringing Rujul and Walid to this place, she made a mistake and inadvertently chose one side over another. Khader tells Zhou that he now owns her, and she owes him money.
