Actress Shannen Doherty, best known for roles in hit TV shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, died on Saturday from cancer at 53.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” her publicist, Leslie Sloane, said in a statement.
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.”
Shannen Doherty indeed had a significant acting career spanning several decades. She gained prominence for her role as Brenda Walsh on the TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which followed the lives of a group of teenagers in Beverly Hills.
Her portrayal earned her nominations for various awards, highlighting her impact on the show and her contributions to television during that era.
Shannen Doherty’s journey has indeed been marked by resilience and courage in the face of cancer.
After her initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 2015, she underwent intensive treatment including a mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy.
She announced remission in 2017 but unfortunately faced a recurrence in subsequent years, with the cancer spreading to her brain and bones.
Throughout this difficult time, she has been candid and open about her experiences, sharing updates on social media to raise awareness about cancer and inspire others with her strength in continuing the fight against the disease.
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating,” she said in November 2023.
Shannen Doherty indeed began her acting career at a young age, appearing in various TV series such as “Voyagers,” “Our House,” and “Father Murphy.” She gained wider recognition for her role as Jenny Wilder in “Little House on the Prairie” at the age of 11.
In 1985, she starred in her first major film, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.
Her breakthrough role came in 1988 when she portrayed Heather Duke in the cult classic teen film “Heathers,” which also starred Winona Ryder.
However, during her time on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” she developed a reputation for being difficult on set, which contributed to her departure from the series after four seasons.
“I was very confused back then about what I wanted for myself, and the attention was way too much,” she said. “I didn’t always handle it that well.”
After her departure from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Shannen Doherty went on to star in the supernatural drama series “Charmed,” where she played one of the three sisters who were witches. The show became another significant part of her television career.
She also appeared in other notable roles, including the TV series “North Shore,” set in a Hawaii hotel, and the offbeat comedy film “Mallrats.”
In her personal life, Doherty has been married three times, with her current husband being photographer Kurt Iswarienko, whom she married in 2011. She ventured into reality TV in the 2010s, participating in shows like “Dancing With The Stars” and the US version of “Strictly Come Dancing,” showcasing another side of her talent and personality to viewers.
Aside from her acting career, Doherty was known for her advocacy as an animal rights activist. She shared her experiences and advice in her semi-autobiographical book titled “Badass,” which aimed to empower young women to live boldly and confidently.
