Amid the notorious Burning Sun scandal, former BIGBANG member Seungri is reportedly gearing up to launch a new nightclub in Hong Kong.
For those who don’t know, Burning Sun was a popular nightclub in Seoul’s Gangnam district owned by Seungri. In 2018, it became notorious for various illegal activities, including drug abuse, sexual harassment, and assault, and the non-consensual filming of sexual encounters.
Although the scandal initially broke in 2018, it regained public attention when the BBC released a documentary detailing Seungri’s and other prominent figures’ roles in the controversy.
This renewed focus has led to increased scrutiny of Seungri’s actions. On May 22, 2024, multiple Hong Kong-based sources reported that the former idol is planning to open a new nightclub in Hong Kong. According to an eyewitness at the Creamfields Hong Kong music festival, Seungri now resides in Hong Kong and is involved in the nightclub scene, particularly around East Tsim Sha Tsui.
A screenshot shared by the eyewitness shows Seungri mingling with nightclub owners and alcohol distributors, as well as women described as “gold diggers” who have undergone extensive plastic surgery.
The news has sparked a wave of backlash online. Many netizens are outraged that Seungri is profiting in Hong Kong despite his tainted past. Critics accuse him of showing no remorse or shame, expressing disgust at his eagerness to start a new nightclub.
The scandal’s resurfacing has also reminded people of previous accusations against Seungri, including allegations that he drugged women to facilitate sexual assault and supplied such drugs to acquaintances. Concerned voices are urging caution among women in Hong Kong, warning them to stay vigilant and hoping Seungri refrains from repeating past misconduct.
