Seth Rollins was born Colby Lopez on May 28, 1986, in Davenport, Iowa. He is of Armenian, Irish, and German heritage and took his surname from his stepfather. After graduating from Davenport West High School in 2004, Lopez pursued wrestling training in Chicago, setting the foundation for his career.
Lopez entered the independent wrestling scene at the age of 19 in 2004. Initially wrestling under the name Gixx, he later adopted the moniker Tyler Black. His first notable success came when he won the NWA Midwest Tag Team Championship with Marek Brave. Black competed in various promotions like TNA, Full Impact Pro, and PWG, capturing the PWG World Tag Team Championship in 2008 and the FIP World Heavyweight Championship later that year.
In 2007, Tyler Black joined Ring of Honor (ROH), where he quickly gained recognition. As a member of The Age of the Fall, Black secured the ROH World Championship and two ROH World Tag Team Championships with Jimmy Jacobs. He also won the 2009 Survival of the Fittest tournament. Black’s run in ROH ended after losing the World Championship to Roderick Strong in 2010.
After leaving ROH, Lopez signed with WWE, debuting in their developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). There, he became the inaugural FCW Grand Slam Champion. Following FCW’s rebranding to NXT, Rollins won the inaugural NXT Championship in 2012. That year, he debuted in WWE’s main roster as part of The Shield, alongside Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. The trio dominated WWE, with Rollins winning the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship multiple times.
