Sailor Moon has solidified its place as one of anime’s greatest series. Created by Naoko Takeuchi in 1991, the magical girl story quickly charmed audiences when Toei Animation brought it to television. Now, Sailor Moon’s uncensored dub is finally set to debut on American TV.
Toonami Rewind, an upcoming late-night block on Cartoon Network, will feature three anime series, including Sailor Moon alongside Dragon Ball Z Kai and Naruto.
This version of Sailor Moon will showcase Viz Media’s recent dub, which is notably different from the censored version aired by DiC in the past. DiC’s dub omitted LGBTQ themes, violent scenes, and the discovery of gender, which were later more thoughtfully handled in Sailor Moon’s Cloverway dub.
Viz Media’s dub aims to faithfully represent the original anime, restoring these significant elements.
Toonami Rewind is slated to begin on May 31st, promising a nostalgic journey through classic anime. The Friday block is expected to resonate with fans of shows like Trigun and Cardcaptor Sakura, who hope to see these titles in future rotations if the block succeeds.
Sailor Moon’s debut marks a new era for fans, providing a fresh opportunity to experience the beloved series as it was originally intended.
