The final episode of the sixth season of S.W.A.T. is making its way to the small screens this week. And it’s been one hell of a ride; we saw this season how Hondo lost control of the team, struggled, and made it back to the lead again. We saw how Sanchez and Deacon went into the private security business, we saw love and breakups, and we saw lots of action from the Special Weapons and Tactics team as they took out bad guys left and right in the City of Los Angeles.
But all good things come to an end, and the final episode of the season will give us a sense of closure for the plotlines this season while also giving us some cliffhangers ahead of the next season, which was already greenlit by CBS, but it’s fair to say that the network also declared that the seventh season would be the show’s final run. But there’s a long way for that to come about.
S.W.A.T. Season 6 Episode 21 Recap
We kick off the next-to-last episode of the season with Sanchez, and he started his own private contractor security firm in direct competition with Deacon’s company. It’s obvious Sanchez wants some recognition in the OpSec game. But it seems that Deacon has more to say about his competition than about himself. But let’s put a pin on that one and talk about the DEA/SWAT anti-gang operation that put people in jail, particularly gang leader Shorty Guzman.
One of the gang members, Muriel, and her brother were trying to leave the gang life and settle with a clean slate in Midwestern USA, but when the cops went against the gang, things went south. We see how the DEA is rougher in how they approach crime than the LAPD. And though the bad guys are the common enemy, the episode will show us that the approach to solving these crimes at a federal level is dramatically different than the one that local cops use. The gang members are treated differently by the DEA feds than how the local cops in Los Angeles deal with them.
The gang is in cahoots with some dangerous Mexican cartel selling heroine, but there’s a shakeup in Mexico, and there’s a shakeup in Los Angeles, and the cops saw that the crime ring was weak, so they decided to take it down. The DEA is shaking down a drug dealer with some muscle, but they’re too rough. As a result, the dealer went to Mexico, only to see his family brutalized by the Cartel as they got wind of the cops.
As the episodes move on, we see a cat-and-mouse game between the DEA, whose demeanor is oftentimes conflictive, with the LAPD and how the war on drugs takes its toll on law enforcement and the regular joes, giving us a lot to think about how that policy impacts communities across America.
