Amid the ongoing craze over the “Barbie” movie, Ryan Gosling’s daughters have raised obvious and no-noone-thought-about-it questions. Although Ryan Gosling has been chosen by Greta Gerwig to portray Ken, his children seem to be puzzled as to why he would be interested in taking on this role.
Ever since the announcement of Ryan Gosling being cast as Ken in the much-awaited Barbie movie film, fans have engaged in discussions and deliberations about this casting decision.
Ryan Gosling opens up on portraying Ken in the “Barbie” movie
During an interview with The New York Times published on July 13, Ryan Gosling, who is 42 years old, shared that the enthusiasm for “Kenergy” might not be as prevalent within his own household.
In a conversation with his co-star Margot Robbie, who is leading the star-studded Barbie film, Ryan Gosling discussed their preparations for their respective roles as Barbie and Ken. During this discussion, the actor, known for his role in “La La Land,” revealed that his own childhood as a child star left him with little time for playing with Barbies.
Furthermore, he mentioned that his two daughters Esmeralda, born in 2014, and Amanda, born in 2016, whom he shares with his partner and fellow actor Eva Mendes, had not played with the dolls before his involvement in the Barbie movie.
Ryan Gosling explained that “Barbie landed in my house at the same time as the script, basically.” He found it intriguing that his children didn’t simply brush the dolls’ hair or dress them up, but rather, they didn’t give them names that are typically associated with Barbie.
Gosling added, “They all have complicated backstories, lives, relationships, hopes, and dreams. It’s truly incredible to see how intricate the world they’ve created for those dolls is”.

Gosling’s daughters are “confused” with their dad’s playing Ken
Gosling shared that his daughters were initially “confused” and questioned why he was playing Ken when their own dolls weren’t referred to as “Barbie and Ken.” Instead, they had given their beloved toys different names.
Gosling shared that his daughters have given their Ken doll a different name, specifically “Darrell,” and imagined him working at a grocery store. On the other hand, their Barbie doll is named “Gym Class,” and she is currently focusing on herself right now.
Gosling humorously remarked that his character, Ken is a rather insignificant presence in his daughters’ imaginative world. He jokingly mentioned their reaction, saying, “What is there to play? Is there meat on the bone?” However, despite their lack of enthusiasm, the actor shared that he easily connected with the character of Ken. He expressed that it came naturally to him, as he “grew up in a house run by women. I live in one now.”
He also mentioned that although his older sister didn’t have Barbies, she was his hero, emphasizing the influence of strong women in his life. Gosling expressed his admiration for his sister Mandi, who accompanied him at the “Barbie” Canadian Press day the previous month. He spoke fondly about their relationship and how it played an important role in preparing him for his portrayal of Ken.
Gosling shared that the experience of working on the “Barbie” movie allowed him to reconnect with his inner child. He expressed how easily he fell into that dynamic and embraced the opportunity to tap into a youthful and playful mindset.
