Russian forces have declared control over the expansive Soviet-era coke plant in the devastated Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, marking their most significant territorial gain in nine months following a fierce battle.
This advancement stands as Russia’s largest since capturing Bakhmut in May 2023, almost two years after President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale war by invading Ukraine.
According to Russia’s defense ministry, their troops have progressed approximately 9 kilometers (5 miles) along the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, with further advancements anticipated after a deadly urban clash. The Ukrainian military acknowledged withdrawing its soldiers to prevent encirclement, salvaging them from months of relentless combat.
Putin celebrated the fall of Avdiivka as a crucial triumph and commended Russian troops for their efforts. Russian state media displayed scenes of Ukrainian flags being replaced by the Russian tricolor, emphasizing the strategic significance of the coke plant’s capture.
Amidst Russia’s offensive, Ukraine faces the challenge of regrouping its forces as it contemplates a substantial mobilization. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has appointed a new commander to oversee the ongoing conflict, reflecting Ukraine’s response to the evolving situation.
Avdiivka, also known as Avdeyevka, holds particular importance for Russia due to its history of conflict. Previously seized by Moscow-backed separatists in 2014, the town was later recaptured by Ukrainian forces, becoming a symbol of resistance against Russian aggression.
Situated in the industrial Donbas region, north of the occupied city of Donetsk, Avdiivka houses a significant Soviet-era coke plant. The area’s strategic importance underscores its value in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
While casualties persist on both sides, with Western intelligence estimating significant losses, the full extent of Ukrainian casualties remains underreported. The conflict continues to escalate, with Avdiivka’s capture representing a significant setback for Ukraine amidst mounting pressure from Russian forces.
