Love detective and mystery stories? Then this one’s for you! Imagine if Gintama was a crime series; that’s what Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective is. An unconventional crime comedy, where you have your smart and suave main character and your dumb but supporting side-kick ready to solve every case that comes their way.
The manga was immensely successful, receiving a nomination for ‘Best Web Manga’ in the Next Best Manga Awards in 2021. Not only did it receive praise from its readers but also from renowned mystery writers like Rintaro Norizuki and Sako Aizawa. Aizawa described the manga as “Authentic mystery manga for the new era.” So is this series worth all the hype? Let’s find out.

The Plot of Deranged Detective
Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective follows the life of Ron Kamonohashi, a quirky private detective, and his unlikely sidekick, Totomaru Isshiki, a police officer with no investigative skills to speak of
. Imagine this, five years ago, Ron was the shining star of the Detective Training Academy Blue until an incident known as the “Bloody Field Trip” led to him being labeled as “temporarily insane.”
Ron is now insolation, and his passion for solving crimes is growing stale. That is until Totomaru asks Ron for help to solve a strange case, and a partnership is formed. Now, Ron finds himself doing what he loves most once again.
The main cast includes:
- Ron Kamonohashi, voiced by Yohei Azakami
- Totomaru Ishiki voiced by Junya Enoki
The anime is directed by Shota Ihata and is produced by Diomedea Studios. Wataru Watari handles the script writing, character designs will be overlooked by Masakazu Ishikawa, and the music compositions will be produced by Yo Tsuji.
Worth a Watch?
Ron Kamonohashi is no ordinary detective. His unconventional methods and strange personality make him a standout member of law enforcement. With his razor-sharp mind, he makes unseen connections and patterns that no one else can do. But is there too much focus on him?
Many readers claim that the manga focuses on Ron way too much, making the series repetitive and doesn’t give the other characters a chance to shine. The way Ron solves a case isn’t shown too well; not many details are displayed, and then suddenly, he’s solved the case. This complaint would be removed if the anime lets viewers witness Ron’s thought process.
Truth be told, if you’re looking for a genuine detective series, this is not it. Some cases don’t make much sense, and that somewhat takes away from it being a crime series.
The side characters don’t add anything to the plot, and that’s a clear sign of a bad manga or anime. Totomaru is given one interaction, and it’s “Oh, I cannot solve this case; please help me, Ron,” and this makes the manga, after a few chapters, kind of boring.
The first part of the manga ended on April 30th; it returned after a hiatus on June 4th, 2023. This manga has room for improvement, but we have to wait until the anime to see if they improve the story, characters, and pacing of Deranged Detective.
