Rockstar Games has officially clarified how Grand Theft Auto 6 retail download codes will work across different regions, ending weeks of confusion surrounding the game’s code-in-the-box editions. The update confirms that PlayStation 5 players will face regional redemption restrictions depending on where they purchase the game, while Xbox Series X|S owners will not encounter the same limitations.
The clarification comes after several retailers listed conflicting information following the launch of GTA 6 pre-orders. Rockstar has now updated its official support documentation, outlining exactly which countries can redeem specific retail download codes and advising players to purchase copies that match their account region.
Rockstar explains PlayStation code restrictions
According to Rockstar Games’ updated support page, region locking applies only to PlayStation 5 retail download codes because of how the PlayStation Network handles regional account restrictions.
To avoid activation issues, Rockstar recommends buying a retail copy from the same region as the PlayStation Network account that will redeem the code. For example, players with a U.S. PlayStation account should purchase a North American version of GTA 6 rather than importing a copy from another region.
Rockstar also published a full list of supported redemption territories. North American codes can only be redeemed in the United States and Canada, while separate redemption regions exist for the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Latin America, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Rest of Asia, and a broader EMEA and Asia region that includes countries such as India, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand, and several others.

Xbox players won’t face region locks
The good news for Xbox users is that the same restrictions do not apply. Rockstar confirmed that Xbox download codes are not region-locked, allowing players to redeem retail codes regardless of their account’s regional settings.
The support page also includes a special note for Japanese customers. Physical code-in-the-box editions sold in Japan must be redeemed within 170 days of the code’s printing date, a requirement Rockstar says complies with local regulations. Assuming a code is printed on GTA 6’s scheduled November 19, 2026 launch day, it would expire on May 8, 2027.
Despite ongoing debate over Rockstar’s decision to ship retail editions with download codes instead of physical discs, GTA 6 continues to dominate digital pre-order charts across multiple PlayStation Store regions. While rumors of a future disc edition have circulated online, Rockstar has not announced plans to release one, making the newly clarified redemption rules especially important for players planning to purchase physical retail copies.
