Taking a management job at Al-Ettifaq, the former captain of both Liverpool FC and the England national team was one of many who departed European football for the Middle East.
He has, however, encountered considerable difficulties, winning just seven of his 19 games. It has been difficult for him to regain his coaching reputation, particularly following an unsatisfactory 11-month Premier League spell at Aston Villa.
Even though he won titles with Rangers in Glasgow in the past, his accomplishments in Scotland are fast disappearing from memory. However, Gerrard still has time to establish himself in his native nation. His current position in Saudi Arabia presents an opportunity for him to show off his skills and land a big contract.
What did Fowler say about Gerrard?
During an appearance on the Up Front with Simon Jordan podcast, Fowler—who used to play alongside Gerrard at Anfield—discussed his feelings on Gerrard’s departure to the Middle East and his possibilities going forward.
He acknowledged his personal affection for Steven as a manager and voiced his belief in Gerrard’s ability to become a premier manager. While acknowledging Gerrard’s less-than-stellar time at Aston Villa, Fowler underlined how critical it is that Gerrard do well in Saudi Arabia.
Fowler speculated that Gerrard might be trying to rekindle his success as a manager, especially the approach he took at Rangers. Highlighting Gerrard’s extraordinary ability as a player and his perceptive grasp of the game, Fowler thought that this move would give Gerrard a chance. He underlined the significance of a positive attitude and performance and said that Gerrard’s long-term goals would benefit from victory in Saudi Arabia.
Fowler also made a suggestion that the choice to relocate might have more to do with the prospects currently available in the Middle East than with the desire to rejoin the Premier League. He said that rather than concentrating on long-term goals, anybody traveling to that area—managers or players alike—might choose to prioritize the current circumstances.
More about Steven Gerrard
Steven George Gerrard MBE is a former player and manager of English football who was born on May 30, 1980. Gerrard, who is widely considered one of the greatest football players of all time and one of Liverpool’s best, played most of his brilliant career as a center midfielder for both Liverpool FC and the England national team, serving as captain of both groups.
Merseyside native Steven Gerrard had an illustrious career with Liverpool from 1998 to 2015, winning nine titles, including three League Cups, two FA Cups, and the coveted UEFA Champions League. He was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance in the memorable 2005 UEFA Champions League final, in which Liverpool defeated AC Milan in a penalty shootout after trailing 3-0.
The FA Cup final of 2006 was subsequently dubbed “The Gerrard Final” in honor of his outstanding contributions. He may have won many cups, but he never won the Premier League.
Between 2000 and 2014, Gerrard played 114 games for England, captaining the team 38 times and tallying 21 goals. He competed in three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014) and three UEFA European Championships (2000, 2004, and 2012), placing him in the Team of the Tournament each time.
Gerrard made his managerial debut at the Liverpool Youth Academy as the under-18 team’s manager in 2018, before taking over as senior manager of Scottish Premiership Club Rangers.
In his third full season as manager, Gerrard led the Rangers to an undefeated league run and their first league title in ten years. Unfortunately, his eleven-month contract at Aston Villa—which began in November 2021—was terminated due to the team’s subpar performance.
