When Carmella and R-Truth first teamed up in 2018, Carmella was the veteran wrestler’s manager. They went on to win the first-ever Mixed Match Challenge competition. Their comedic partnership, which featured the well-known mid-match dance break, struck a chord with the WWE Universe. An admirer of the duo, Brian “Road Dogg” James, admitted that he came up with the concept for the dance break.
He absolutely loves the dance break, he loves Ronnie ‘The Truth’ Killings, and he loved Carmella with him,” James said in “Oh You Didn’t Know.” How absurd was it when they would just stop and call it a “Dance break”? Then, they would return to the action with ease, and he thought that was really fantastic.
They started including other people in the dancing breaks as a regular part of their act; at one point, Vince McMahon even joined in. Not everyone, though, enjoys these humorous performances since they can take away from the gravity of the in-ring competition—especially when they cut into matches to allow for dancing.
James asked, “If you’re okay with someone like Orange Cassidy, who’s quite the character, why can’t you accept these characters?” Truth and Carmella were not presented as a very serious in-ring team during their partnership, in contrast to Cassidy. Rather, their funny skits, which often featured the 24/7 Championship, were meant to amuse viewers.
