Along with others, the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, also mourned the death of the soca singer on Tuesday. While mourning his death, Browne said, “His passing was extremely sad and shocking. He was one of our best soca artists and enjoyed the patronage, admiration, and respect of our people. He will be immensely missed,” according to Antigua News.

Recently, in late November, Clyde Tha Outlaw, a soca music sensation, passed away in a car accident, and the community was reeling from his death. While pointing this out, DJ JEL tweeted on X (formerly Twitter), “The industry barely processes Clyde Tha Outlaw; now we Hadda process Drue; tomorrow isn’t promised.”
Who was Ricardo Drue?
Ricardo Drue was born in Antigua and Barbuda but was raised in Trinidad and Tobago. He grew up immersing himself in R&B, reggae, and soca music. Drue made the start of his career by performing in Soca Boy Hands, where he was acclaimed as a finalist in soca music competitions.
Drue’s 2017 single, “Vagabond,” made him renowned among others. He had performed across the Caribbean and also for the Caribbean community in the United States. In recent years, Drue has resided in Raleigh, both in North Carolina, Orlando, and Florida, where he also performs on stage for shows oftentimes. The singer had also taken the stage once at the festivals in Queens and the Bronx in New York.
The singer’s popularity on streaming platforms has been increasing over the past years, and this year, it made a breakthrough, where his streams on Spotify went from 100,000 in 2022 to 1.2 million in 2024.
