The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten is another regular rom-com anime. This anime is based on a teenage love story that unfolds very slowly. This is another seasonal anime romance series, but it might not appeal to everyone. It’s a simple love story that gets boring and repetitive after a while, as the characters do not develop that much at all.
The 12-episode anime based on a light novel happened to get a good response, but anime doesn’t do that. It didn’t get many answers, but it’s one of Studio Project No.9’s best animations yet. They have adapted many other anime series. Yet only a few have earned enough credit, and this series is one of them.
This series focuses on how a shy girl and an anti-social boy develop their relationship from being neighbors to being lovers. The girl (Mahiru Shiina) spoils the boy (Amane Fujimiya) by caring for and cooking for him. They develop their feelings throughout the show and get more intense but never reveal their true feelings for each other.
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Episode 10 Review
Episode 10 begins with Amane revealing the secrets of his life in junior high school to Mahiru. Amane thought the other students were his friends, only to know they were just using him for his money. This scene was animated well to show the character’s pain but intense enough and not painful enough to help viewers feel the same emotions.
After Amane confides this to Mahiru, we see an emotional bonding scene where Mahiru hugs Amane, and them having an emotional moment. This scene was cute, but if there had been a couple of backdrop beats to support the scene, it would have made it better. The stage lasts long enough to show super romantic and cute scenes between the two but the colors used in the frames just blind you out. It is way too bright to look at.
The episode ends with a typical rom-com scene where all the friends gather to study for their final exams at school but end up having fun. After the study session, it was nice to see the cute and energetic romantic scenes between the two (Amane and Mahiru). It’s cute how they act shy, and also, the episode ends with Mahiru saying, “I’ll pamper you,” which is very cute and probably the only highlight of the show where some emotions are expressed correctly at the right time.
The Verdict
According to us, the story seems pretty simple without many plot twists. Also, some parts can be related to ‘Horimiya,’ another anime, like the beginning when Amane is introduced as an anti-social character and Mahiru is introduced as popular among the boys’ characters.
Also, the time when Amane dresses up and shapes his hair looks super cool and is not recognized by many. This is similar to how the characters in Horimiya were introduced, and Miyamura changes when he shapes his hair and removes his glasses. Also, the ‘Dandere’ type character they were trying to portray, Mahiru Shiina as was not up to the mark as she did not act shy enough and was sometimes just in need of attention.
The character design was somewhat bright but pretty, along with the background aesthetics, which balances out the bad character portrayal. The songs of the show were also not so romantic. The character development was also prolonged and does not look like it will progress any further anytime soon. The main couple (Mahiru Shiina and Amane Fujimiya) have just held hands as of episode 10.
They both just shared their pasts in this episode and have revealed to their class that Mahiru was out with someone and it was a date but have not revealed the guy’s name or the relationship status. The story will not be able to gather much more recognition and audience unless they make the songs more romantic and the story progresses and gives more romantic scenes. Also, the backdrop beats to make the scenes more romantic are important, but that is not being implemented at all.
There are a couple of wholesome scenes, like when the couple (Mahiru Shiina and Amane Fujimiya) hold each others’ hands and go out on a date, and Mahiru says she is with Amane in front of two girls who asked him out. Also, in the beginning, when the characters are introduced along with the school and the houses, the colors are lovely but fade along as the series progress.
It is a lovely one-time watch you can enjoy if you have just started watching anime and this is one of your new rom-com. But do not compare this to the old classics like Maid Sama, Horimya, Nisekoi, or Toradora if you really want to enjoy the show.
