Resident Evil Requiem has sold an estimated 1.3 million physical copies on PlayStation in 2026, generating more than $92.3 million in revenue from disc sales alone.

According to data published by Alinea Analytics in its report, Physical Game Revenues on PlayStation, Capcom’s survival horror game ranks first among new 2026 PlayStation releases by physical copies sold.

The figures arrive as Sony prepares to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028, raising questions about the future of boxed releases.

RESIDENT EVIL REQUIEM’S PHYSICAL SALES ACCOUNT FOR 30.2% OF PLAYSTATION REVENUE

Alinea Analytics estimates that physical PlayStation copies account for 30.2% of Resident Evil Requiem’s revenue on the platform. The figure also represents approximately 15% of the game’s revenue across all platforms, highlighting the financial contribution of PlayStation disc sales to Capcom’s latest horror release.

The game’s physical sales performance stands out when compared with other major PlayStation releases. EA Sports FC 27, which generated an estimated $727.9 million in total PlayStation revenue, earned approximately $64.9 million from physical copies, representing just 8.9% of its revenue. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Wolverine generated an estimated $64.6 million from physical sales, accounting for 32.3% of its PlayStation revenue.

Resident Evil Requiem’s physical PlayStation sales also generated 1.8 times more revenue than all Xbox sales combined, including physical and digital purchases across Xbox consoles and Xbox PC, according to Alinea Analytics.

SONY’S 2028 DISC PRODUCTION DEADLINE RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT PHYSICAL GAMES

The sales figures arrive amid a major change to PlayStation’s distribution strategy. In an official announcement published on the PlayStation Blog, Sony confirmed that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. New releases after that date will be available in digital formats, although games released on disc before the deadline will not be affected.

Sony cited changing consumer preferences and the industry’s shift toward digital distribution as reasons for the decision. Digital purchases can also be more profitable because they avoid physical manufacturing, distribution costs, and retailer margins.

However, Resident Evil Requiem’s estimated $92.3 million in physical PlayStation revenue illustrates why discs remain commercially significant for major single-player releases. The figures do not establish how the market will change after 2028, but they show the substantial revenue that physical copies can generate before Sony’s planned transition.
