Nippon TV recently released the findings of an internal investigation into the sudden passing of manga author Hinako Ashihara, known for Sexy Tanaka-san.
The report revealed on May 31, 2024, shed light on significant communication breakdowns between Ashihara and the drama production team, leading to a loss of trust.
The investigation revealed that the drama adaptation was proposed to Shogakukan in late February of the previous year.
Troubling Communication Gap in ‘Sexy Tanaka-San’ Mangaka’s Death Case
However, conflicting understandings emerged regarding the creation of an original ending for the drama due to the manga’s incomplete status.
While Nippon TV’s production staff believed they had the green light for an original ending, Shogakukan intended to base it on suggestions from Ashihara to maintain the integrity of the unfinished manga. This discrepancy in communication laid the groundwork for further misunderstandings.
Ashihara had expressed her desire for a faithful adaptation of her work, outlining three conditions for the adaptation on her blog before her passing.
However, subsequent meetings failed to effectively communicate these conditions to the drama production team, exacerbating the distrust between the parties.
In addition to communication failures, the investigation highlighted potential shortcomings in the production timeline, with the drama developed within a relatively short period before broadcast.
To prevent similar issues in the future, the report recommends early decision-making in projects, along with early contract agreements between the network and the author. Direct meetings between production staff and the author are also suggested to avoid misunderstandings.
Nippon TV President Akira Ishizawa issued an apology for the incident, expressing a commitment to improving communication and production practices.
He emphasized the importance of addressing the identified issues to ensure a smoother collaborative process between television drama production teams and original manga creators in the future.
