Tony Green, the renowned darts commentator and beloved star of ITV’s Bullseye has passed away at the age of 85 following a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
The somber news of Green’s demise was confirmed through a statement shared on the official Bullseye Facebook page, expressing deep sorrow:
“It’s with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear friend and much-loved colleague Mr. Tony Green.”
“Tony passed away peacefully today after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.”
“Our love, thoughts, and prayers go out to all of Tony’s family, who we hold such affection for, to all of Tony’s friends and those who were lucky enough to work with him.
“Thank you, Tony, for all the memories, all the laughs (and trust us there were many!), and all the special times filming Bullseye together, what wonderful years those were, and we are honored to have shared them with you.
Born in Hull in 1939, Tony Green served as the BBC’s darts commentator alongside Sid Waddell from 1978 to 1994. Despite Waddell’s departure from the BBC in 1994, Green continued in his role until 2016.
During the 1980s, Green soared to prominence as the co-host of Bullseye, a popular game show where contestants vied in darts games and quizzes for monetary rewards and prizes.
For a span of 15 years, from 1982 to 1995, Green skillfully navigated contestants and audiences through the exhilarating moments and challenges of each dart thrown, cementing Bullseye’s status as a television staple.
At its peak, the show was watched by 20 million people as Green became known for quirky phrases including:
“Keep out of the black and into the red, nothing in this game for two in a bed.”
His passing marks the second loss for the beloved game show, following the death of presenter Jim Bowen in March 2018 at the age of 80.
At the time, Tony said:
“Lost a legend today, but most of all a friend. RIP Jim x.”
In 2010, Green temporarily stepped away from presenting duties to undergo treatment for tongue cancer. In 2015, he lent his voice as the narrator and commentator for the BBC’s Let’s Play Darts for Comic Relief.
