Everyone in this story has gone through some despair. According to the plot, Carl must be on the evil side, but for this reason, I believe that he overcame that despair and went missing because he is holding back some very evil force.
I feel like this because, as mentioned, most characters in this story actually go through despair and then actually find growth. Thus, my reason to say that Carl might have actually gotten strong and held down a fort somewhere. It’s just my assumption.
From what I understand, Carl fell into despair after losing once. So, you might think that he is a total scumbag if he couldn’t continue living just because he lost once. However, you can’t blame Carl for that.
Carl’s father is a swordmaster who hails as one of the ten strongest on the whole continent. He is praised as the greatest genius by the whole continent. So many people, including his younger sister, look up to him. But since Carl gets beaten by Ignet in just three strikes, he is getting shamed by everyone.
Many readers don’t see the depth of the relationship between the characters because it’s something they themselves don’t possess yet. Works of fiction are often like mirrors. You can only see what you already are.
Many stories and characters within those stories can only be understood when you have enough life experience to empathize with their journey.
Of course, it doesn’t mean Carl isn’t a flawed character with faults. He certainly is. But it means that to admire and understand this journey, you need to have enough life experience to connect with all the pressure, sadness, loss, and pain he has gone through.
