‘Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire’ is a fantasy anime series based on magic and rune circles. This anime focuses on how a Hero-King blessed by the Divine Goddess to kill the Demon King is on his deathbed and wants to live a new and ordinary life somewhere in the kingdom he has built.
The anime is a light novel adaptation animated by Studio Comet. They have done various other anime series that people know about, including Initial D First Stage. This fantasy anime is a 12-episode series, which means a one-night watch. It gives an interesting watch for many people who love the fantasy genre as it has that and a lot of waifus in it.
The Characters
Bilford Rafinha: She is the deuteragonist of the story and the best friend of Inglis since childhood. She is the daughter of Duke Bilford and a candidate for the next generation of knights. She is strong-willed and has a strong sense of justice. She will not hesitate to speak against others who are wrong, no matter the difference in their status.
Eucus Inglis: She is the protagonist of the story. Initially blessed by the Divine Goddess to become the Hero-King and kill the Demon King, he succeeded. Now, he has established his kingdom, old and on his deathbed. He wishes the Goddess that, for his services, let him be reincarnated into this world and in his kingdom so that he can enjoy the kingdom he built. Little did he know that the reincarnation would be as a super cute girl.
Arcia Liselotte: She is the daughter of the Chancellor of her kingdom. She started as a stubborn and unreasonable jerk who despised Leona because her brother decided to betray the Holy Knights and join the Bloodchain Brigade. She realized her mistake later, kept her stubborn personality aside, and apologized to Leone for how she had treated her.
Olfa Leone: She is the sister of the treacherous holy knight Leon. She is a knight in training, just like the rest of the girls, and she is here to redeem her name after her brother tarnishes it. She is kind and hardworking and has kept striving despite what was told. She endured a lot of pain, but now she is not alone. She has friends.
The Plot
The story focuses on the Hero-King Inglis, blessed by the Divine Goddess Alistia to help defeat the Demon King. Inglis succeeds in defeating the Demon King and establishing his kingdom. He is now on his deathbed when the Divine Goddess comes to grant him a wish for the extraordinary services provided to him. He wishes to be reincarnated into the same world in his kingdom to enjoy the kingdom that took him years to build.
He was granted the wish and reborn as the daughter of the noble Eucus family with full memories. He was surprised in the beginning but then accepted that fate. As soon as he (from now on will be referred to as she) was born, he was attacked by a magician beast (magic-infused monster). She is a baby who does one of his spells from her past lives to save everyone by destroying the beast.
Six years later, she is found to be ruthless, making her ineligible to become a knight, so she decides to be Rafinha’s squire for the rest of her life to be together with her to protect her at all times. This worked in favor of Inglis’s plans as she did not want to be a strong figure who takes command and does not fight; this time, she wanted to fight and improve herself to be the strongest.
From now on, Inglis only focused on protecting herself and Rafinha while always wanting to battle strong magicite beasts. She wanted to become so strong that she could defeat a Prismer (the highest form of magicite beast) with one shot of her power. Little did she know about the highlanders and surface dwellers wars.
The Highlanders have been on the island, which floats in the air, for as long as anyone can remember. Inglis herself used to be on that island; followers have become greedy over time and kept the knowledge of magic to themselves while trying to suppress the surface dwellers who have less knowledge about magic and its ways.
Inglis wants to know more about this world but will have to wait till she gets older and stronger so that she can have access to different information. So, at 12, she has become a beauty that amazes everyone. Also, Inglis and Rafinha have started their first step toward changing the world as they start by enrolling at the Royal Knights Academy.
They are both super strong and pretty, but not many people know them. Many people know Rafinha’s elder brother Rafael, a Holy Knight of the Kingdom. But as the story goes on, we uncover how the Highlanders are tricking surface dwellers into giving their land to become a part of Highland and how the common folks are unaware of it.
A revolutionary group of people, Bloodchain Brigade, wants to stop Highlanders from taking the lands and oppressing the surface dwellers. The Bloodchain Brigade consists of various members over different levels. They have Hyral Menas (modified humans or demi-humans with enhanced magic affinity and can become weapons for people with special-class runes), Holy knights, and civilians.
The leader of the Bloodchain Brigade is an unknown being with the caliber of fighting with Inglis. They both fight based on aether not used by anyone else on the surface, making them both very peculiar and different. The Bloodchain Brigade only targets the Highlanders and aims to stop their actions and not do any harm to the surface dwellers.
Review
The anime consists of a lot of girls who are animated beautifully. The Otakus call them waifus, and this anime has many of them and all types. The anime also focuses less on the men in the series. The only part is that the protagonist is a girl, so she only has girlfriends is quite weird in the modern day, but I can not say much about it.
When you watch the series, you will feel like the budget was well used as the anime was beautifully designed, and all the little details were also given focus. There were some parts in the series where the animations done on the magicite beasts looked a little bad (meaning you could see the efforts not put in).
The anime’s storyline also seemed like a repeat from ‘The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World,’ like how the protagonist used to be the strongest and still is but aims to be just the supporting character to live a peaceful life now. But still, they fail to do so and become the strongest and most recognized in the new world.
The anime also seems to mix many concepts like the mag, ic, aether, spells, and modern flying technology. Too many of these concepts and the world will stop making sense soon. There are also the characters trying to develop feelings for the protagonist, but no one knows that he used to be an older man despite her current appearance, making her act the way she behaves.
So far, the story has progressed smoothly, and the fights are on a basic level such that the protagonist does not become the strongest immediately. The characters being introduced and used are also in a decent way and do not divert us from the story. But the mysteries in the series are just rising in numbers.
Who is the leader of Bloodchain Brigade? Why can he use aether too? How is aether different from mana? Why do people not remember using mana or aether? How much time has passed since the protagonist died and was reborn? Several questions like this still need to be answered but will not be answered until the next season arrives.
Our Verdict
The series is a good watch for wholesome scenes, beautiful waifus, and decent enough fight scenes. But this isn’t for you if you want an action anime. It represents the fantasy and magic aspect on a basic level for everyone to understand, which is considerate of the author. The storyline has yet to develop, but I hope it is not just random girls playing around to become the strongest.
