Now, the story of Radio Flyer solely revolves around a family with two little boys, but the main focus here is the boys. It’s been 3 decades, and viewers and supporters still discuss Radio Flyer’s ending as it is a bit confusing, so let’s discuss it here.
Radio Flyer Movie Plot Summary
Mike (Tom Hanks) discovered that his boys were fighting. He asked what happened, and one of his sons was saying that promises are nothing. Mike decided to narrate a story to them. He went back in time when he was just a kid. He had his brother, Bobby, and his mother with him.
In 1969, Mike, 11, Bobby, 8, their mother, Mary, and a dog, Shane, used to live together. Mary falls in love with a man who doesn’t really like the kids, but as long as Mary is happy with him, the kids are ok. Kids used to call him ‘The King’ because he used to behave like a brutal king.
He used to drink and torture Bobby, who was the youngest. Bobby and Mike didn’t open up in front of their mother as she was happy with him. Eventually, the kids made a list of fascinations that helped them to avoid their stepdad. One unfortunate day, Bobby was hospitalized because of an unsupervised incident.
The culprit was The King. Shane gets revenge by biting him violently on his arm. The King is then put behind bars. After getting released, he promised his family that he would never torture anyone in the house, but he violated it. The boys were at school, and The King was at the house with Shane. He forgets about the promise and attacks the dog.

He nearly kills the poor dog to take revenge on it. After all this, the kids plan an escape for Bobby; meanwhile, Mary starts hating the behavior of The King. Finally, she requests for a divorce. Mary was with such a horrible man because of her kids, but when she found out that this man was way more dangerous for her kids, she decided to take action.
However, The King didn’t pay heed to her in the start. Shane didn’t die, which was a good thing for the kids. Mike and Bobby started working on their plan with all their hearts. They wanted to do something which would help Bobby run away. They didn’t have a concrete plan, but still, they started working on it.
They got inspired by an urban legend of a boy whose name was Fisher. He, too, wanted to escape, so he converted a bicycle into a flying machine (it looked like a bicycle, though). He took that structure and attempted to fly away over a cliff. Now this cliff is known as the wishing spot.

The kids took a red toy wagon and named it Radio Flyer, and started converting it into an airplane so that they could send Bobby and Shane away. The kids captured their shed and secretly took away The King’s tools. They designed an airplane with wings, an engine, and lots of things.
Now, the diagram of an airplane was ready; the only thing the boys lacked was money. So, they started collecting it by doing minimal stuff for strangers. For example, they used to find goal balls and sell them again to golf players. Mary was about to lose her son as the kids did their best and created an airplane out of a toy wagon.
The kids wrote a cute farewell letter to their mother, which she read a bit later. On the other hand, The King discovered the whole plan. He rushed to the cliff while the boys were taking the airplane to the same spot. The king tries his best to stop them but Shane attacks him violently to protect the kids.
Bobby gets on the wagon and speeds down the hill on his own. The king was not stopping, but the wing knocked him down. Bobby successfully escapes leaving Mike and Shane behind. The airplane was a success as it glided into the air. Meanwhile, Mary arrives on the cliff with Jim Daughtery, a police officer who arrests The King on the spot.
Mike and Bobby never met again. However, Bobby writes to Mike, and he receives postcards from different places. The amazing story by Mike ends, and he concludes the story with the line, ‘That’s how I remember it.’ He then teaches his sons the importance of promises.

Radio Flyer Movie Ending Explained
Radio Flyer’s ending had been a matter of discussion for a very long time. People still discuss it because of its complexity and intricacy. After all the tough times, Mike and Bobby decided to do something. They made an airplane with all the hopes that they might escape their stepdad, who tortures them a lot.
One fine day, Bobby gets onto the wagon-turned-airplane and soars high into the sky, leaving his dog and big brother, Mike, behind. Their Dad was there on the cliff watching Bobby fly and not able to do anything. He kept on looking at the wagon when Mary arrived with a police officer who arrested him.
Mary divorced this man, and Mike was saved as well. If Mary had not come on time, then I can not even imagine what he would have done to Mike. The ending doesn’t seem to be a simple one. Mike and Bobby were kids, and Bobby flew alone on an aircraft that was not even tested. People ask a lot of questions.

Some believe that Bobby’s soul is free. The successful takeoff was a privilege for Bobby as his spirit glides freely into the sky, escaping a toxic environment. The second group believes that the kids were very smart and wanted to escape the situation, so they used their brains and creative thinking.
That is even true. When there’s a will, there’s a way. Here, kids were dying inside after getting abused and tortured, especially Bobby. These little kids had innocent hearts, too, which didn’t let them open up to their mothers. They thought that their mother might get alone again.
The third conclusion which is very common and a bit complicated – Old Bobby died that day. The killer was The King. Bobby’s flight was the representation of his death. That day, Bobby died, and a new version left everything behind.
The physical body of Bobby was beaten brutally, and this little kid had bruises all over his body. Therefore, he died a few minutes after the takeoff. The final scene got the viewers goosebumps when they saw Mike and Shane bidding a silent goodbye to their beloved Bobby.
