Created and produced by Ava DuVernay, with Oprah Winfrey also acting as the executive producer, Queen Sugar is a family drama series. The series derives its inspiration from the novel of the same name ‘Queen Sugar’ (2014) written by Natalie Baszile. The show made its debut way back on 6 September 2016 and is still going strong after 6 years.
Queen Sugar season 7 premiered on 6 September 2022, on the sixth anniversary of the show. This season is the finale of the show, and it contains a total of 13 episodes. So the audience can have more time with their beloved characters before they are required to adieu their farewell.
Set in Louisiana, the series revolves around three siblings. Still reeling from the aftermath of their father’s sudden death, new problems are being piled on top of each other. The issue of property division arises as their father has left behind a vast 800-acre sugarcane farm.
This show highlights the crucial problems faced by the African-Americans, mentions Chattel slavery in the history of America, and the racial discrimination faced by them, even in the legal system. It’s due to this progressive view that the show has garnered attention, and various awards are accorded to it, including 2 NAACP Image awards.
The Cast of Queen Sugar
The story follows three siblings – Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley), residing in New Orleans, is a determined journalist and activist; Charley Bordelon (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), mother to her beautiful son Micah who lives in Los Angeles and works there; and their brother, Ralph Angel Bordelon (Kofi Siriboe), a single parent trying to cope with parenthood and his unemployment. When Charley discovers that her husband is cheating on him, she moves to her father’s sugarcane farm with her son.
Newer characters come in later seasons, while some leave the show after making appearances as cameo.

Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 3 titled, “Slowly And Always Irregularly,” was released on 20 September, 8:00 P.M (ET). The basic synopsis of this episode includes
The farmers support Parthena and craft a plan. Nova organizes a ring shout.
The eviction of Parthena has affected everybody, but Ralph Angel has taken it more personally than the others. Darla (Ralph’s wife) tries to convince him that the co-op is doing the best they can, and he needs to make peace with the fact that even if things aren’t fine now, they will be in the future.
Ralph, being his sometimes stupid self, confesses to Trinh (Ralph’s ex-girlfriend) when they are setting up a stall at the farmer’s market that Darla doesn’t understand how important family legacy is. Darla overhears it and gets upset since she has always supported him every step of the way, and yet he refuses to acknowledge that. She and Violet then have a heart-to-heart which was very much needed. It’s only when Hollywood (one of the friends) talks some sense into him that he realizes his mistake and apologizes.
On the other hand, Nova begins the preparations to arrange a traditional Ring Shout for the clan. She and Dominic also seem to be coming closer. Nova was at first hesitant, but when her friend, Chantelle, points out her hesitation, saying she always does so in a relationship, Nova gets a reality check, and she decides to finally and completely pursue Dominic.
The episode ends with the entry of Sam Landry amidst the ongoing celebration of the Ring Shout of the clan. He takes note of the reporters present there and realizes that it’s not worth causing a scene. Thus, he turns back and leaves. Soft alluring music plays in the background as the siblings bask in their win.
Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 4 Preview
The fourth episode of this season is titled “Spaces Fill“. As Sam walked out of the field in the last episode, although dejected, he had a determined look on his face. He may have lost the battle, but the war is still on.
It will be interesting to see how the victory plays out for the rest of the Bordelon family. Also worth noting is the budding romance between Nova and Dominic. What does the next episode have in store for them? Will Nova go all in, or would she still hold herself back?
Episode 3 did end on a peaceful note, but the drama is still brewing in the air. The audience is promised loads of entertainment in the upcoming episodes.
