Prime Video has confirmed a May 21, 2026 release date for its upcoming motorsports documentary Kyle Larson vs. The Double, a feature-length project centered on one of racing’s most difficult challenges. The film follows two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson and his ambitious two-year effort to complete “The Double,” a rare and demanding feat in the world of auto racing.
Produced by Imagine Documentaries, Markay Media, and NASCAR Studios, the documentary is directed by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Cynthia Hill. It will debut exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, positioning it as a major addition to the platform’s expanding sports content portfolio.
At its core, the documentary examines Larson’s attempt to complete “The Double,” which involves racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. The challenge spans 1,100 miles of racing across two states, requiring drivers to transition between entirely different vehicles and racing styles within hours. It is widely regarded as one of the most physically and logistically demanding accomplishments in motorsports.
Larson’s journey, documented across 2024 and 2025, highlights not only the race-day intensity but also the extensive preparation behind the scenes. The film explores the weeks and months leading up to the attempt, including training, travel, and coordination between racing teams. It also addresses the physical toll associated with the feat, from extreme heat and dehydration to sustained G-forces and mental fatigue.

Speaking about the project, Larson emphasized the level of detail captured over the two-year period. He noted that while fans often see the final performance on race day, they rarely witness the preparation and pressure that define a driver’s routine. The documentary aims to fill that gap by offering an unfiltered look into his professional and personal life, including the balance between competition and family responsibilities.
A significant portion of the film focuses on the logistical complexity of “The Double.” Drivers must first complete 500 miles at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before immediately traveling to Charlotte Motor Speedway to compete in NASCAR’s longest race. The tight schedule leaves little margin for error, and only a small number of drivers have ever attempted it.
Beyond the technical challenge, Kyle Larson vs. The Double positions itself as a character-driven story. It examines the mindset required to pursue such an extreme goal, focusing on persistence, risk, and the willingness to operate at the limits of human endurance.
The narrative deliberately shifts away from traditional sports storytelling that centers on victory, instead emphasizing the process and determination involved in chasing a nearly unattainable milestone.
The project also brings together a high-profile production team. Executive producers include Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, alongside industry figures such as Jeff Gordon. The film is produced in collaboration with Hendrick Motorsports and Penske Entertainment, ensuring direct access to key moments and perspectives.
The documentary’s release also aligns with Prime Video’s continued investment in live motorsports coverage. The platform’s NASCAR broadcast returns on May 24, beginning with the Coca-Cola 600, marking the first of five consecutive Cup Series races available exclusively through the service in the United States.
With its combination of technical depth and personal storytelling, Kyle Larson vs. The Double aims to provide a comprehensive view of one of racing’s most demanding pursuits, offering both dedicated motorsports fans and general audiences a closer look at what it takes to compete at the highest level.
