Bloodaxe still 2

Prime Video has revealed the first-look images for Bloodaxe, its upcoming historical action series from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst. The newly released images offer the first substantial glimpse at the show’s Norse world, including its warriors, royal conflicts, large-scale battles, and the bloody struggle surrounding the Norwegian throne.

Bloodaxe Season 1 will consist of eight episodes, all of which will premiere exclusively on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories. Prime Video has not yet announced an exact premiere date. However, the streamer is already moving forward with the series, as Bloodaxe was previously renewed for Season 2, which is currently in production in Ireland.

At the center of the new Norse saga are Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, and his formidable wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, portrayed by Jessica Madsen. Together, they will face rival rulers, betrayals, and shifting alliances while fighting for control of Norway.

BLOODAXE FOLLOWS ERIK AND GUNNHILD’S FIGHT FOR NORWAY

Season 1 chronicles the rise of Erik Bloodaxe, one of history’s most famous Norse raiders. Erik and Gunnhild’s pursuit of the Norwegian throne unfolds as rival factions threaten to tear the kingdom apart, turning their campaign for power into a wider Scandinavian conflict.

The struggle will not remain confined to Norway. According to Prime Video’s official synopsis, the escalating chaos draws in

“the ruthless Kings of other Scandinavian countries, and even a powerful English ruler.”

The series is positioned as a large-scale Norse saga built around warfare, political maneuvering, changing loyalties, and bloody betrayals.

Xavier Molyneux and Jessica Madsen lead a cast that also includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte, and Jesper Christensen.

VIKINGS CREATOR MICHAEL HIRST RETURNS TO NORSE HISTORY

Michael Hirst is returning to familiar historical territory after creating Vikings, which originally ran for six seasons and subsequently spawned Vikings: Valhalla. For Bloodaxe, Hirst is working alongside Horatio Hirst, with both serving as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.

The first-look images suggest the new project will retain the gritty visual identity associated with Norse historical dramas, showing warriors, Viking ships, settlements, royal gatherings, and large groups preparing for battle.

Morgan O’Sullivan also executive produces Bloodaxe through O’Sullivan Productions, while Steve Stark serves as an executive producer under Toluca Pictures. Arturo Interian, John Weber, and Sheila Hockin are also executive producers.

MGM Television is producing the series. The studio’s current television slate includes productions such as Wednesday, The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo, Vikings: Valhalla, and the upcoming The Testaments.

Prime Video has yet to reveal when viewers can expect Bloodaxe Season 1, but the early Season 2 renewal means the Norse saga is already planned to continue beyond its initial eight episodes.
