The marriage between Northern Irish professional golfer Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll has ended.
McIlroy’s representative confirmed that divorce documents were filed on Monday, marking the conclusion of their seven-year marriage.
Documents obtained reveal that McIlroy initiated the divorce proceedings in Florida, citing the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”
In a statement, McIlroy’s representative expressed his desire for a respectful and amicable resolution during this challenging time, emphasizing that McIlroy will refrain from further comment.
In the filing, McIlroy asserted that he and Stoll should have “shared parental responsibility” for their 3-year-old daughter, Poppy, and proposed creating a parenting plan.
He also seeks the court’s validation of their prenuptial agreement, executed in March 2017.
Stoll, 36, and the athlete, 35, initially crossed paths in 2012 at the Ryder Cup, where she served as a PGA transport official.
During a 2019 interview with the Golf Channel, the golfer reminisced about meeting her when she arranged a police escort to his course after he overslept.
“Erica, that week, was always the one that was checking us in and out. She was there at transportation, so she was always in the car park over there,” he told the outlet at the time.
“But yeah, it’s still cool to look around and think about that week and, obviously, everything that’s happened since then. It’s pretty cool.”
The couple exchanged vows in 2016 in a lavish star-studded ceremony at the medieval Ashford Castle in Ireland.
Their wedding, rumored to cost $250,000, was a private affair attended by several A-listers including Stevie Wonder, Niall Horan, Ed Sheeran, and Chris Martin.
In 2020, they delightedly announced Stoll’s pregnancy during her third trimester. Daughter Poppy arrived in August of that year, marking the start of their family journey.
The four-time major champion marked the birth of his daughter on Instagram with a poignant black-and-white photo, showing the infant holding his finger.
“Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born August 31st, 12:15pm,” he wrote in September 2020.
“She is the absolute love of our lives. Mother and baby are doing great. Massive thank you to all the staff at Jupiter Medical Center and Dr Sasha Melendy for their amazing care.”
