A newly surfaced piece of Pokémon concept art has given fans their closest look yet at what could have been Lapras’ long-lost evolutionary family. Shared online by Pokémon news account Centro LEAKS, the image reportedly shows a scrapped pre-evolution for Lapras that was never introduced into the series, despite the iconic Water-type remaining one of the franchise’s most recognizable Pokémon for nearly three decades.
Although the artwork has not been officially confirmed by Game Freak or The Pokémon Company, it has quickly sparked speculation among longtime fans who have long wondered why Lapras never received either a pre-evolution or an evolution while many other Generation I Pokémon were expanded in later games.
Scrapped concept reignites calls for a Lapras evolution
The leaked sketch depicts a much smaller creature resembling Lapras, featuring a softer body shape and less developed shell. While only a partially cropped image has surfaced, fans have been able to make out enough details to identify it as an apparent early-stage version of the beloved sea transport Pokémon.
Lapras debuted in the original Pokémon Red and Green games in 1996 and has remained one of the franchise’s signature creatures ever since. Unlike Pokémon such as Electabuzz, Magmar, Scyther, or Mr. Mime, which later received additional evolutionary stages, Lapras has largely remained unchanged. Its only alternate form to date is its Gigantamax form introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Pokémon Winds & Waves could give Lapras a bigger role

Previous reports suggest the games will introduce a tropical island setting with expanded traversal mechanics, allowing players to ride or interact with numerous Pokémon across land, sea, and air.
Given Lapras’ long history as one of the franchise’s most iconic ocean-travel companions, many fans believe the new exploration-focused setting would be an ideal opportunity to finally revisit the Pokémon. While there is no evidence that the leaked design will appear in the upcoming games, the concept has renewed interest in seeing Lapras receive the evolutionary line many players have hoped for since the original games.
