Students at Paris’ prestigious Sciences Po University organized a protest on Friday, blocking access to the campus in solidarity with Gaza. Demonstrators demanded condemnation of Israel’s actions, echoing similar movements on U.S. campuses.
Chanting slogans in support of Palestinians, students adorned the university with Palestinian flags and wore keffiyeh headscarves, symbols of solidarity with Gaza’s plight.
Hicham, a 22-year-old master’s student, emphasized the role of academia in addressing global injustices, citing the need for Sciences Po to denounce Israel’s actions.
Zoe, a 20-year-old master’s student, expressed satisfaction with the growing mobilization of students across universities, emphasizing their determination to continue protesting until the violence in Gaza ceases. Despite requests for comment, Sciences Po officials remained silent on the matter.
Reports indicated that police intervened on Wednesday night to remove a group of students blocking access to Sciences Po, drawing criticism from left-wing politicians.
Meanwhile, clashes between police and students opposed to Israel’s actions erupted on U.S. campuses, reigniting debates over the handling of protests.
The protests coincide with escalating tensions in Gaza, with health authorities reporting over 34,000 Palestinian fatalities resulting from Israel’s assault.
Israel claims retaliation for a Hamas attack in October, which resulted in numerous casualties and hostages.
The demonstration at Sciences Po reflects a broader global movement demanding accountability for Israel’s actions and advocating for Palestinian rights.
As protests intensify and clashes persist, the plight of Gaza remains a focal point of international attention and activism.
