Capcom’s upcoming action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch on September 25, 2026, placing it in one of the busiest release windows of the year. While the final week of September has quickly filled with high-profile titles, the development team says it remains confident that Onimusha can stand out thanks to its distinctive gameplay and iconic lead character.
Following its release date announcement during Sony’s State of Play presentation, Onimusha became one of many games scheduled for September as publishers shifted their launches away from Grand Theft Auto 6, which is expected to dominate attention following its November release. Despite the crowded calendar, Capcom believes the franchise has enough unique qualities to attract players.
Capcom admits surprise over September’s crowded lineup
Speaking in an interview with VGC, producer Akihito Kadowaki admitted the team did not anticipate just how many major games would target the same release period.
“We were pretty surprised. We probably expected a lot of titles would be in that window, but we were still surprised to see just how many games were there.”
The week surrounding Onimusha’s launch now includes titles such as Silent Hill Townfall, Dune: Awakening for consoles, Control Resonant, and several other anticipated releases. Additional games arriving within days of September 25 include Marvel’s Wolverine, Ace Combat 8, Minecraft Dungeons 2, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, making it one of the most competitive release periods in recent memory.
Despite the competition, Kadowaki dismissed concerns that the crowded schedule would significantly impact sales.
“We think our lead character, Musashi, is a key selling point, alongside the satisfaction of the combat itself. The Issen mechanic, the parries, and all of those things come together to make a really unique, fresh experience, so we’re not worried.”
Capcom’s recent success adds motivation for the development team

While competing releases present one challenge, the Onimusha team is also working under the weight of Capcom’s recent string of critically acclaimed titles. The publisher has enjoyed major successes with franchises including Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and upcoming releases such as Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata.
Director Satoru Nihei acknowledged that expectations inside the company are high but said the studio views that success as motivation rather than pressure.
“To say that there’s not any pressure would be a lie! I can’t really deny that.”
He added that Capcom’s momentum has benefited the team, explaining that it’s easier to develop games when the company is enjoying strong critical and commercial success.
Onimusha remains on track for September 25
Recent rumors suggested Capcom might move Onimusha’s release date forward to avoid the crowded September schedule. However, the publisher officially denied those reports and confirmed that September 25, 2026, remains the game’s launch date across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Recent hands-on previews have also generated positive impressions. In its preview, VGC described the game as blending stylish action with over-the-top samurai combat, comparing its gameplay to a mix of Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and Sekiro.
Whether Onimusha: Way of the Sword can carve out its place during one of gaming’s busiest release months remains to be seen, but Capcom’s development team appears confident that its fast-paced combat, Musashi’s return, and the franchise’s legacy will help the game stand apart from the competition.
