Oniichan wa Oshimai! Episode 11 Review
In Episode 11 Kaede exposes Mahiro to makeup for the first time when she offers him lip balm for his birthday. His pals are quickly impressed by this small cosmetic enhancement. His fashion-conscious classmates swarm around him, asking him questions about it, and it quickly becomes the talk of the class. A little lip balm may appear overdone, but the reason it’s such a huge deal becomes obvious towards the end of the segment: the professors have barred the children from wearing any makeup at all.
Girls are forbidden from fully expressing themselves in public in the realm of makeup, so it becomes a source of secret curiosity whenever they join it. In general, seeing these characters behave their age is adorable. My favorite feature of the anime is seeing Momiji develop chuunibyou in real time; usually, chuunibyou anime characters are only seen after they’ve completely corrupted, but she’s at the proper age to start doing edgy stuff now.
The two guys also performed a little White Day prank in this episode. Mahiro’s faint awareness that people might be interested in him suggests that, while he may have the wisdom of age, he is far from a saint. He believes that because he is using lip balm, he has the right to request more chocolate. I believe he is the most immature of the bunch.

There is also a horoscope story in this episode that evolves into a birthday story. Although he knows his friends won’t talk to him because they are planning a surprise birthday party, he still gets depressed even though he knows they won’t talk. I appreciate the fact that nobody in this series tells him that “boys shouldn’t cry!”. Onimai subverts gender expectations at times without being mean-spirited.
