Oniichan wa Oshimai! Episode 10 Review
This episode of Onimai Mahiro may disappoint viewers if he doesn’t reflect on gender issues. He seems to be going through life without actively considering the long-term consequences of always posing as a girl. Though he appears to be a man at heart, he admits that this is the one day he feels proud to be a girl after Valentine’s Day. When Mahiro inadvertently lets out a high-pitched scream and wonders if his masculinity is threatened, he reminds himself of his attraction to women to console himself.
Though gender identity and sexual orientation aren’t the same things, his thoughts don’t drift to that notion. Thus, Miyo’s fascination with yuri has less impact than if she were not. In contrast to his fervent denial of his interest in male pornography, Mahiro tells Miyo she shouldn’t feel ashamed. Although he may be afraid to admit such a thing while occupying a female body, this attitude still reflects an insecurity in him that he would not project onto others.
Mahiro’s feelings wouldn’t be any less sympathetic if he tackled LGBTQ topics headfirst, but that wouldn’t make the series a very different one. The mismatched dynamic between Mahiro and them continues here. When he sees them hanging around the adult section of the bookstore, he smiles in understanding, but they react with terror when they realize he is paying attention to them.
They were also adorable when they accepted Valentine’s Day chocolate from Mahiro, and the episode’s best visual gag followed right after that. The screen turns red and the other boys collectively transform into rabid zombies, desperate for female approval. It was hard not to notice Kaede’s obsession with beauty standards in this episode.
She insisted that girls wear short skirts during winter, and told Mihari girls should apply skincare products right away. Until now, Kaede has always been portrayed as a kind-hearted big sister; however, these remarks and her sadistic view of massages make Kaede seem more human. Although they aren’t the episode’s funniest jokes, Kaede needed to be given a little more attention.
