Luffy’s Straw Hat has been at the center of attention since the very beginning of the series. Introduced as a treasured gift from Shanks, it has remained one of the most iconic symbols in One Piece. While most fans view the hat as a symbol of the bond between Luffy and Shanks, one theory suggests that it serves a far greater purpose than anyone could have imagined.

As the Elbaph Arc continues to unravel some of One Piece’s biggest mysteries, fans have begun revisiting long-standing questions surrounding the Straw Hat and its true significance. Central to that discussion is the journey to Laugh Tale, a destination that can only be reached by locating all four Road Poneglyphs. Now, a popular theory suggests that Luffy’s Straw Hat could be the key to reaching the final island, with some fans even speculating that it is a secret fifth Road Poneglyph.
If this theory proves true, it would completely change how fans view one of the most iconic treasures in the series.
What Are Road Poneglyphs? A Quick Overview
There are four Road Poneglyphs in One Piece. They are large, mysterious, and apparently indestructible stones that, when brought together, reveal the location of the final island in the Grand Line, Laugh Tale, where the legendary treasure One Piece is said to be hidden. Created by the Kozuki Clan of Wano, these stones were designed to preserve ancient history in a form that no one could ever destroy.

While collecting all four Road Poneglyphs is considered nearly impossible, Gol D. Roger, alongside his crew and Kozuki Oden, managed to gather all four and successfully reach Laugh Tale, becoming the first and only known people in history to discover the One Piece.
The former Pirate King not only found the greatest treasure in history but also uncovered the truth of the Void Century, the true nature of the Ancient Weapons, the meaning of the “Will of D.,” and Joy Boy’s past. It is said that the future Pirate King will uncover these same truths as well.
Where Is the Fourth Road Poneglyph?
The location of the fourth and final Road Poneglyph remains one of the biggest mysteries in One Piece. While the other three Road Poneglyphs have been found on Zou, Whole Cake Island, and Wano Country, the last one remains undiscovered.

In Chapter 967, the missing Road Poneglyph was seen on Fish-Man Island alongside Joy Boy’s apology Poneglyph. However, by the time the Straw Hat Pirates visited the island, the stone had mysteriously disappeared. It remains a mystery who took the stone.
Some fans believe that the Road Poneglyph is being hidden by Blackbeard, who has been taking control of territories that once belonged to Whitebeard. Since Blackbeard was a member of Whitebeard’s crew, he may have known about the Poneglyph. To prevent him from acquiring it, someone may have moved it to a different location.
Another theory suggests that Red-Haired Shanks may hold the last Road Poneglyph, since he traveled to Fish-Man Island with Roger. However, this may be unlikely, as Shanks has shown no interest in claiming the One Piece. If he wanted to, he could potentially reach Laugh Tale without needing the Road Poneglyphs.
This is where the final theory emerges: the mysterious “Man with the Burn Scar” is believed to have taken the fourth Road Poneglyph with him. He was first mentioned in Chapter 1056, when Killer, the vice-captain of the Kid Pirates, stated that finding him was key to joining the race for the One Piece. In Chapter 1081, Lafitte of the Blackbeard Pirates elaborated further, revealing that the man sails aboard an all-black ship and creates massive ocean vortexes to sink anyone who dares approach him. This makes him nearly untouchable.
Could Luffy’s Straw Hat Actually Be a Road Poneglyph?
This theory first gained traction on r/OnePiece, where fans proposed that the world of One Piece was once a single continent that was shattered during the Void Century through the use of an Ancient Weapon. The theory also explains why every island in the Grand Line possesses its own unique magnetic field, making Log Poses essential for navigation.

But Laugh Tale may be different. Unlike every other island in the Grand Line, it appears to exist entirely outside the reach of any magnetic field, which could explain why no one has found it in over 800 years and why the Road Poneglyphs are the only known way to locate it. If Laugh Tale followed the same magnetic rules as other islands, someone would have discovered it long before Roger did. This is where the theory surrounding Luffy’s Straw Hat comes into play.
Of everything in the One Piece world, the Straw Hat is the only object that connects Roger, Shanks, Joy Boy, and Luffy. There is nothing else in the series that has been passed down from generation to generation, carrying the will of freedom.
Chapter 906 takes this theory a step further. Imu is seen venturing deep into Pangea Castle in Mariejoa, where a giant Straw Hat is kept inside a frozen chamber. In the same scene, Imu is holding Luffy’s wanted poster. The King of the World stands alone before a giant Straw Hat while holding a picture of the boy who wears one. That is not the kind of coincidence Oda would include by accident.
This only strengthened the theory, and with One Piece now moving rapidly through its Final Saga, it may not be long before fans finally learn the truth.
