Olivia Munn disclosed that she battled breast cancer and opted for a double mastectomy, expressing gratitude to her medical team and encouraging fans to assess their own risk.
“I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day.”
The 43-year-old actor shared on Instagram on Wednesday images and a video of her receiving treatment at a hospital.
Olivia Munn revealed that she underwent a genetic test in February 2023, screening for 90 different cancer genes, all of which came back negative.
Despite the negative results, her doctor proceeded to calculate her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, a decision she credited with “saving my life,” Munn wrote.
Having recorded a high score, Munn underwent a biopsy, revealing an aggressive form of cancer in both breasts. Within 30 days of the biopsy, she underwent a double mastectomy and has since undergone four surgeries over the past 10 months.
She chose to keep her struggle private initially, stating,
“I needed to catch my breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing.”
Munn expressed gratitude to her family and friends, particularly acknowledging her partner, comedian John Mulaney, for his unwavering support.
She recounted his presence before each surgery and his gesture of placing framed photos of their son, Malcolm, by her bedside, ensuring they were the first things she saw upon waking up.
Previously a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Munn boasts an impressive filmography, including roles in Magic Mike, The Predator, Office Christmas Party, and X-Men: Apocalypse.
