Renowned American intellectual Noam Chomsky has been discharged from the Beneficencia Portuguesa Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he had been receiving treatment for some time.
According to a statement from the hospital, Chomsky, who is 95 years old, will continue his treatment at home.
Chomsky’s wife, Valeria Wasserman, has dismissed media reports that he had died. In an email to AFP, she clarified:
“It’s false. He is well.”
The newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported that Noam Chomsky was recently taken to a hospital in the city after experiencing complications from a stroke he suffered a year ago.
The stroke had left him with difficulty speaking and moving the right side of his body. Chomsky and his wife, Valeria Wasserman, have a home in Sao Paulo.
Chomsky first gained prominence in the 1950s with his revolutionary theory that the ability to form structured language is innate.
Over his career, he has authored more than 100 books on Middle Eastern conflicts and geopolitical issues.
Additionally, he has been an outspoken activist on a wide range of issues, including U.S. intervention in Vietnam, labor rights, and environmental concerns.
