Nintendo has unexpectedly fueled new speculation about a potential Fortnite collaboration just days before the game’s Override season begins. Nintendo of America posted a cryptic message on social media saying,
“Looks like Fortnite sent us something for Aug 20? Wonder what it does…”,
prompting fans to wonder whether the company could finally be preparing to bring one of its iconic characters to Epic Games’ battle royale.
The timing is particularly notable because Override is built around gaming legends and features numerous recognizable characters from across the industry. However, Nintendo characters are notably absent from the season’s revealed promotional artwork, leaving fans questioning whether the August 20 tease could signal a surprise announcement.
Why Nintendo’s Fortnite Tease Has Fans Speculating
Nintendo has historically maintained a cautious approach toward putting its characters in Fortnite, despite supporting the game on its hardware. The company previously became linked to reports that Samus Aran was considered for a Fortnite crossover alongside Kratos and Master Chief, but the collaboration reportedly collapsed over Nintendo’s requirement that the character only be visible to players on Switch.
That history makes the latest Nintendo of America post particularly interesting. Fans have interpreted the message as a possible hint that Epic Games has sent Nintendo something connected to the upcoming season.

Some theories have gone even further, with fans pointing toward silhouettes in the Override promotional artwork that allegedly resemble Mario and Link. Neither character has been officially confirmed for the season, and Nintendo has given no indication that its first-party characters are finally coming to Fortnite.
The possibility of Samus appearing has also resurfaced because of the previous reports surrounding her potential collaboration. A Nintendo crossover would represent a major change from the company’s earlier position and could become one of Fortnite’s biggest gaming collaborations.
For now, the August 20 tease could simply involve a Nintendo-related promotional item, trailer, or in-game code rather than a character crossover. The Override season is scheduled to begin on August 20, 2026, so fans should not have to wait long to discover what Nintendo is teasing.
