Nintendo has no plans to abandon physical video games, despite the industry’s continuing shift toward digital distribution. Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, has confirmed that the company will continue considering consumer preferences when deciding how to distribute its games.

The statement comes as discussions about the future of physical gaming intensify. With digital purchases becoming increasingly common, collectors and players who prefer owning tangible copies have raised concerns about the availability of physical releases.

Speaking in an interview with Coelho, van Zyll emphasized that Nintendo understands the importance of physical games to its audience.

“There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well,”

the executive explained, highlighting the company’s current approach to game distribution.

NINTENDO SWITCH 2 WILL CONTINUE SUPPORTING PHYSICAL RELEASES

Van Zyll explained that Nintendo considers consumer demand when making decisions about game distribution. He also pointed out that the Switch 2 launched with support for both physical and digital purchases, with the company still relatively early in the console’s lifecycle.

Nintendo’s current approach includes two types of physical releases. Standard game cards contain the game data, while Game-Key Cards require players to download the full game using an internet connection. Nintendo’s official Game-Key Card guide explains how the alternative format works.

Although Game-Key Cards remain controversial among collectors who prefer complete games on cartridges, their presence indicates that Nintendo is experimenting with different physical distribution methods rather than abandoning physical media entirely.

For now, van Zyll’s comments offer reassurance to players who prefer collecting boxed games. However, his statement confirms the company’s current position rather than guaranteeing that physical releases will continue indefinitely.
