The first official trailer for Fortitude has arrived, offering a look at Simon West’s ambitious World War II thriller about one of the most elaborate deception campaigns in military history. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Dusko Popov, the real-life Serbian spy whose exploits helped inspire Ian Fleming’s James Bond, alongside Matthew Goode, Ed Skrein, Ben Kingsley and Michael Sheen.

Fortitude Turns a Real Military Deception Into a Spy Adventure
Operation Fortitude serves as the foundation of Fortitude. The Allied deception campaign was designed to convince Nazi Germany that the main invasion of Western Europe would take place at Pas-de-Calais instead of Normandy.
The strategy relied on an extraordinary collection of fake evidence. Allied planners used dummy tanks, aircraft and ships, fabricated radio communications, actors and double agents to make the fictional invasion force appear convincing. The objective was to keep German forces away from Normandy long enough for the actual D-Day operation to succeed.
The film follows British intelligence figures Dudley Clarke, played by Ed Skrein, and Thomas Argyll “TAR” Robertson, played by Matthew Goode. Their operation expands into a network involving figures such as Winston Churchill, Ian Fleming and several double agents.
Nicolas Cage Plays the Spy Who Helped Inspire James Bond
One of the film’s biggest attractions is Cage’s portrayal of Dusko Popov. The real Popov was a Serbian double agent whose wartime activities became an inspiration for Fleming when he created James Bond.
The trailer clearly embraces that connection. Cage’s Popov orders a martini “shaken, not stirred,” while another sequence plays with the number 007 through a visual reference involving Fleming. UPI reported that the trailer deliberately highlights Popov’s connection to Bond while introducing Cage’s flamboyant interpretation of the spy.
That gives Fortitude a lighter espionage flavor alongside its historical setting, rather than presenting the operation solely as a traditional military drama.
Matthew Goode and Ed Skrein Lead the Mission
While Cage provides the film with its most recognizable spy connection, Goode and Skrein appear to drive the central deception operation. Their characters must construct an entirely fictional military threat convincing enough to fool German intelligence.
The supporting cast adds considerable star power. Ben Kingsley, Alice Eve, Jordi Mollà, Art Malik, Lukas Haas and Ron Perlman are among the performers appearing alongside Cage, Goode and Skrein, while Michael Sheen plays Churchill.
Fortitude reunites West with Cage after their previous collaborations on Con Air and Stolen, giving the director another opportunity to build an action-heavy vehicle around the actor.
