To celebrate 25 years of Serial Experiments, Lain, Anique, and anime studio, Kasagi will release an alternate reality game titled Layer 3301: De-Cipher. A quarter of a century since Serial Experiments Lain anime debuted, captivating the anime community with its intriguing narrative and mind-blowing themes, the franchise will now release a game to allow the fans into the world of Serial Experiments Lain once again.
Released in July 1998, Serial Experiments Lain quickly gained a cult following for its creative blend of cyberspace, psychological thriller, and life-threatening situations. The series blurs the lines between reality and the “Wired” or the internet and explores concepts of identity, consciousness, and the dynamic and ever-changing link between humans and technology.
Taking inspiration from the themes and narrative of Serial Experiments Lain, this new ARG promises to affect players intellectually, emotionally, and philosophically, similar to what the original series did. The release date for the game is unknown, but fans can buy a digital collectible called a Protocol Key to access the game. The anime’s 25th-anniversary website will distribute early access keys this month.

Serial Experiments Lain: 25 Years
Created and co-produced by Yasuyuki Ueda, with Chiaki J. Konaka as the writer and Ryūtarō Nakamura as the director, the show spans across 13 episodes and presents a deep story that continues to impress viewers to this day. Animated by Triangle Staff and featuring the original character designs of Yoshitoshi ABe, Serial Experiments Lain follows the relationship between an adolescent girl named Lain Iwakura and the dark network known as Wired.
The ARG game will allow players to unlock new dimensions of the Serial Experiments Lain storyline by using their Protocol Key to interact with digital elements within the game. As they play, fans will be rewarded for their achievements with exclusive prizes, which include limited digital and ‘Phygital’ memorabilia, and acquire private “cel art, which comprises hand-drawn or painted stills” used in the production of the anime.
Supervising the immersive alternate reality game is Yasuyuki Ueda, the original anime’s producer, ensuring seamless integration between the game and the beloved series.
Yoshitoshi ABe mentioned the team’s intention to create a world that feels like a near future, only a few years away, integrating the concept of the Japanese “Zashiki-Warashi” spirit. This spirit alludes to the idea of something “lurking or quietly hiding within the small, mysterious corners of the internet.” The game aims to capture this atmosphere with fleeting signs and symbols that may hold significance, only to disappear before they can be fully grasped.
“Existential classic that paved the way for blockbuster films such as The Matrix,” described Crunchyroll. Expected to release in June 2023, this game promises to deliver a great experience as the series did.
The Plot of The Anime
Fourteen-year-old Lain Iwakura finds herself caught in a confusing situation after receiving a disturbing email from her deceased classmate, Chisa Yomoda. Despite her lack of interest and inability to use technology, Lain opens the email, unwillingly entering the Wired, a virtual realm similar to the internet.
This moment starts a journey for Lain as she becomes wrapped up in a series of bizarre mysteries. Mysterious individuals known as the Men in Black start appearing, having an uncanny knowledge about her. Not knowing what reality is and what isn’t, Lain is thrown into increasingly weird and strange events where the ideas of “identity, consciousness, and perception” take on new and intense meanings.
As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Serial Experiments Lain, the announcement of this new alternate-reality game adds an exciting feature to the franchise. It proves how impactful this series has been on the psychological genre and the anime world. Get ready to question reality once more as you play Layer 3301: De-Cipher and dive into cyberspace.
