If you are a reader, then there is no way you have not come across the present time’s one of the most popular authors, Colleen Hoover. Now whatever you may think of her and her books, you have heard of her, and you have entered libraries and book fairs and thought to yourself if such places have become Colleen Hoover‘s special.
Her cult following started with her 2016 released novel titled, It Ends With Us, which left many young women heartbroken and wrecked. And things have looked up for her ever since. Anything that the author writes ends up becoming a Tik Tok trend.
She has become the new ‘thing’, as the forty-three-year-old author specializes in writing young adult romances and seems to have a weird inclination toward making all of her characters ridiculously sad.
She continues to ride on the success of It Ends With Us and has since put out a bunch of new books, with the recent one being, Never Never, which was originally a three-part book that the author released in collaboration with a South African writer, Tarryn Fisher back in 2015. The book was released once again as just a stand-alone.
Now if you have read any of her books, you would know that they have all of the popular tropes that young people on social media seem to be excited about, alongside stories that have loopholes all through and through. The quality of her recent works seems to have dropped a lot considering she has, at times, released two books in the same year.
With cliched tropes and predictable storylines, it feels less like a great piece of literature and more like a well-written fanfiction. But while the author continues to go higher on the ladder as the hot trendy, yet ridiculously messy and low-quality writer, let us talk about one of the recent re-releases that we mentioned earlier.
If you want to know more about her book, Never Never, along with its ending explained, then continue reading till the end.
Never Never Ending Explained
The book mainly revolves around the two main characters, Silas Nash and Charlize Wynwood, best friends since basically forever and lovers since they were fourteen. And while their life had been fine up until now, things changed one fine day when the two were sitting in class like normal, and something in them felt weird.
It takes them a while, but the two realize that they do not remember the other in the same way at all. All of the firsts they shared, from their kiss to their first night together to when they told each other that they could not imagine their life while being away, had been wiped off.
Panic settled as in as they had been ripped off some of their fondest life memories, and so they decided to go on a hunt, not just for their memories but also to find out exactly what it was that happened to them.
But obviously, things do not go as planned; with their memories returning but getting lost again, the two start to doubt each other, questioning whether they even want to be together anymore. The authors behind the novel have worked together to write the two perspectives in the book. And Hoover even revealed that she is the brain behind Silas’s characterization and point of view, whereas Tarryn Fisher took over Charlize’s character.
The First Part
The start of the book tells us that the two barely remember anything about the other, although the memories of other basic tasks are still intact. It will not take you long to realize that Silas’ character in the first book is amazing. The man can barely put down his girlfriend’s name in his memory, but he continues to love her all the same.
He set the bar high when he clearly did more to get their memories back and discover what happened than Charlize did. Throughout the book, he does his best to make sure that Charlize is well looked after and protected. He really did work his butt off trying to get to the bottom of whatever happened to them.
And while he is trying his best to bring back his lost self and memories, Charlize, on the other hand, is just begging people to hate her. She has had a tough life, especially in terms of family relationships, and with her past good and bad memories gone, she sees the entire situation as less of a minus and more of an opportunity.
She sees the clean slate as a way to start her life again, this time on her terms and in a way that she does not get hurt as she had in the past. She helps Silas but not with her full heart in it. The end of the first book comes with heartbreak and major trust issues between the couple as family secrets get revealed, and the two are forced to question their relationship, finally ending things with a break-up.
The Second Part
With the second book, Silas seemed to have developed ways to deal with the constant memory losses. He wrote a letter to himself mentioning everything worth remembering. As for Charlize, she also continues losing memories and depends on Silas heavily to bring them back.
Silas misses his school and gives up on classes, his game practice, and his big game day as well because he is just that desperate to find out why such a thing would happen to them. And it is in the moment when we find that Charlize is not around that she has gone missing, nowhere to be found.
He realizes that he would need help in getting Charlize back, so he turns to his brother and tells him every detail of all that has happened to them in the past few weeks. The two agree to look for Charlize and manage to find her after much trouble.
This part of the book is more thriller-like than adult romance, but it keeps you on the edge of your seat, wanting more.
A Disappointing Wrap
The third part of this book was one that thousands around the world were desperately hoping for. We wanted so badly to know what was causing their memory loss and how the story that has been so intriguing until now will now end. But it is much to our disappointment that we tell you that the book does not give what the readers wanted. While we were hoping for some thought-out grand scheme of things, the two writers seem to have gone for the cliched and easier option to put an end to this masterpiece.
With still no idea why the two keep losing their memories, the authors introduce Charlize’s father and some more of her family’s background story. They introduce another angle into the story where Charlize gets trapped by her father’s ex-girlfriend, and we are not sure why they thought it would be great to drag the story instead of just getting to the exciting part.
Finally, after all of the dirty family secrets and hidden lies come to light, we move to the climax of the book, and this is where the book gets completely ruined. Our main leads are two high school students, deeply in love with each other, but high schoolers are still the same.
We are told that the reason why the two kept losing their memories, especially those related to each other, was because the universe wanted to make sure that their love was real. It sounds sweet but also a tad bit cliched.
They have their whole life ahead of them and a billion ways that things could change for the couple as they get old. So, excuse me if we sound ridiculous, but saying that fate meddled in their relationship to put their love to the test and to make sure these two soul mates get scarred into never leaving each other’s side sounds like a bit much.
Basically, what the universe wanted for them was to not have any secrets, no matter whether it affected their life or not. The two are soulmates and should share everything with each other, so they continue losing memories till every dirty little secret comes out, and the couple survives it to finally be together in the end with their memories intact.
Our Thoughts
You have to keep in mind that this a young adult romance with a sprinkle of godly forces in it, so really anything could have happened. While the build-up did make us hope for some higher force’s intervention or even alien invasion or maybe, black magic, the fact that the writers opted for the easy and less risky way out is a bummer.
The book, with its first two parts, had immense potential, but the third part definitely felt a bit boring and anti-climactic. Unlike Hoover’s early books, which were still interesting and worth reading, this one feels half-baked and disappointing.
