Netflix Horror Series: The Haunting Of Hill House Review

The Haunting of Hill House is out on Netflix. The horror series is directed by Mike Flanagan and is chilling to the core. Based on a novel by Shirley Jackson; it told the story of Crain family and was adapted into a ten-episode TV series for Netflix. Written in 1959, The Haunting Of Hill House is considered to be one of the best novels in the horror genre.

Flanagan was drawn to the works of Shirley Jackson, and this particular family drama fascinated him the most. The series as I mentioned debuted on October 12th, and it tells the story in a nonlinear format, it deals with Crain family encounters of past in the house and their present-day lives. The family members are shown to be still haunted by events that happened decades ago.

Mike Flanagan talks of the show in a very existential way; he says everyone is haunted in some way or the other and this TV series plans to show how haunting transcends times. More than the story of haunted hill house it is the story of the family haunted by the summer they spent in the house. At the beginning of the show, you get an idea of the tragic mystery that surrounds the family.

This mystery is spun into an entire season involving the Crain family. By the end of my binge watch, all secrets were out, and all plot lines came together into one big plot line, from the 1990’s to the present day. From the 1990’s to today, a lead of the show Micheil Huisman who was a kid then is haunted by events that took place still today. Micheil plays the eldest in the family, Steven Crane. He’s grown up to be an author in the supernatural genre, but his most chilling account is that of the hill house.

Steven Crane in the show grew up never believing the events that happened in the Hill House. As an infamous writer, he suddenly picks up the events he’s a skeptic at the hill house and turns them into a book, and that’s how the story begins. His success turns Steven into a man haunted by events of his past. Mike Flanagan has directed all ten episodes to the show, and all these are available on Netflix.
