A new industry report suggests that the battle between streaming giants is no longer being fought inside apps, but inside AI-powered search results. According to fresh research released by 5W Public Relations, platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ are leading a new “AI visibility” race that determines what services viewers are recommended before they even open an app.

The findings come from the Entertainment & Streaming AI Visibility Index 2026, which analyzed how generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews recommend streaming platforms. The report highlights a major shift in viewer behavior, where audiences increasingly rely on AI to decide what to watch and where to watch it, making visibility in these systems a crucial factor for streaming success.

Netflix and HBO Max Dominate AI Recommendations

The report ranks Netflix as the most visible streaming platform across AI-generated responses, followed closely by HBO Max and Disney+. These services consistently appear in recommendations for common user queries such as “what should I watch tonight” or “best streaming service.”

However, the rankings also reveal that subscriber size is no longer the defining factor. Instead, AI systems prioritize platforms that provide detailed, structured, and publicly accessible content information. This includes rich metadata, critic-style descriptions, and well-organized catalog pages that AI engines can easily analyze and cite.

According to PR Newswire, the study found that platforms investing heavily in editorial infrastructure are outperforming competitors that rely primarily on in-app discovery.

Apple TV+ and Netflix

Why Apple TV+ Is Beating Bigger Platforms

One of the most surprising findings in the report is the performance of Apple TV+, which ranks fifth despite having a significantly smaller subscriber base than services like Hulu and Paramount+. The reason, according to the study, lies in how Apple structures its content.

Apple TV+ provides detailed, indexable title pages with extensive metadata, making it easier for AI systems to understand and recommend its content. In contrast, some larger platforms limit access to their catalogs behind login systems, reducing their visibility to AI engines.

This difference has a measurable impact. The report shows that even niche platforms like The Criterion Channel and Mubi outperform larger services such as Peacock in certain recommendation categories, simply because their content is more accessible and better organized for AI consumption.

The Rise of ‘Answer-Box’ Streaming Decisions

Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W, emphasized how dramatically viewer behavior is changing. “The streaming wars are now an answer-box war,” he said in a statement published via PR Newswire. “Viewers are no longer scrolling Netflix to decide what to watch. They are asking ChatGPT to decide which streaming service to buy and what to put on tonight.”

He added that platforms with strong editorial metadata are effectively winning the moment of decision. “The viewer never opens the app because the AI never tells them to,” Torossian explained, highlighting the growing importance of being visible in AI-generated answers.

This shift marks a fundamental change in how streaming platforms compete, moving the battleground from user interfaces to search visibility within AI systems.

What the Data Reveals About Viewer Intent

The report analyzed over 60 different viewer-intent queries, ranging from general recommendations to specific content searches. It found that different types of queries produce very different winners.

Service-selection queries tend to favor major platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+. Meanwhile, title-recommendation queries often highlight platforms with strong editorial curation, allowing smaller services to compete more effectively.

Family-friendly queries are dominated by Disney+, which benefits from clear parental controls and age-rating systems. On the other hand, live sports queries are led by platforms such as YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV, as these services provide detailed channel and schedule information that AI systems can easily process.
