Netflix is returning to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2026 with one of its most expansive and ambitious showcases to date. The streaming platform has revealed a wide-ranging slate of animation that spans anime, original films, and franchise expansions, highlighting its continued push to dominate the global animation space.

Following a landmark year where Netflix Animation earned multiple awards and industry recognition, the company is now building on that momentum with a carefully curated lineup of projects. From fresh anime adaptations to bold original concepts, the Annecy showcase will offer exclusive sneak peeks, first-look visuals, and behind-the-scenes insights from some of the biggest names in animation.

The presentation is structured across multiple days, featuring dedicated sessions for anime, feature films, and episodic storytelling. This multi-layered approach reflects Netflix’s growing investment in animation as a core pillar of its content strategy.

At the center of Netflix’s Annecy lineup is the “Next on Netflix Animation” showcase, where several high-profile projects will receive exclusive previews. Among the most anticipated is The One Piece, a brand-new anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s globally celebrated manga.

Unlike the long-running anime series, this version will start from the beginning of the East Blue saga and reimagine it using modern animation technology. Produced by WIT Studio, known for its work on high-quality anime productions, the series aims to balance nostalgia with innovation. This makes it one of the most important anime projects currently in development.

Another major highlight is Netflix’s upcoming animated Ghostbusters series. Developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, the project brings back franchise veterans Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who will attend the festival to present an exclusive preview. Set for a 2027 release, the series is expected to expand the Ghostbusters universe in a way that appeals to both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.

Netflix is also teasing its animated feature Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, which offers a fresh twist on the classic story. Executive produced by Taika Waititi, the film shifts focus to a new group of kids attempting to break into Willy Wonka’s factory. The story introduces a more rebellious perspective, positioning the younger generation as central characters in a high-stakes narrative that blends humor and fantasy.

Anime Takes Center Stage With Expanding Global Appeal

Anime remains a cornerstone of Netflix’s strategy, and the Annecy showcase reinforces that commitment. The dedicated Anime Studio session, titled “Netflix Anime: Bold Stories, Boundless Worlds,” will spotlight a diverse lineup of upcoming projects designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

Among the biggest returning titles is Blue Eye Samurai Season 2. The critically acclaimed series will expand its narrative beyond Japan, taking its protagonist, Mizu, to London. This shift in setting signals a broader scope for the story, as it introduces new conflicts, alliances, and cultural dynamics.

New anime projects such as Sparks of Tomorrow and The Ribbon Hero further highlight Netflix’s commitment to original storytelling. Sparks of Tomorrow, set in an alternate steampunk version of early 20th-century Kyoto, explores themes of loss, ambition, and technological progress. Its emotionally driven narrative and unique world-building make it one of the more intriguing additions to the slate.

Meanwhile, The Ribbon Hero, directed by Yuki Igarashi, is set to premiere at Annecy. Inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight, the film tells the story of a lone hero defying fate in a beautifully crafted world. Igarashi’s reputation for detailed animation and dynamic action sequences has already generated strong anticipation for the project.

Another notable entry is Bass X Machina, a steampunk Western infused with anime influences. Produced in part by Studio Mir, the series combines gritty storytelling with stylized visuals, showcasing Netflix’s interest in blending genres and cultural inspirations.

Visionary Films and Creator-Driven Projects

Beyond anime, Netflix is also emphasizing creator-driven storytelling through its original film lineup. One of the standout projects is Ray Gunn, directed by Brad Bird. Set in a futuristic city inspired by 1939 aesthetics, the film follows a private detective entangled in a case involving aliens, murder, and celebrity culture.

Ray Gunn has been in development for more than three decades, making it one of Bird’s most personal projects. His appearance at Annecy, moderated by Aardman co-founder Peter Lord, is expected to provide rare insight into the film’s creative journey. This level of access adds significant value for both fans and industry professionals attending the festival.

Another notable film is Steps, which reimagines the Cinderella story from the perspective of the stepsisters. Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, the film challenges traditional fairytale tropes by presenting its so-called villains in a more sympathetic light. With a voice cast that includes Ali Wong and Amanda Seyfried, Steps blends humor with emotional depth, making it a strong addition to Netflix’s family-oriented offerings.

New Series, Release Dates, and Festival Highlights

Netflix is also using Annecy to provide updates on its upcoming series lineup. Alley Cats, created by Ricky Gervais, is set to premiere on August 7, 2026. The adult animated sitcom follows a group of feral cats steering life’s absurdities, combining humor with social commentary in Gervais’ signature style.

Festival attendees will get an early look at episodes from the series, along with a masterclass featuring Gervais himself. This adds a comedic dimension to Netflix’s otherwise action-heavy slate, ensuring a balanced mix of genres.

In addition to previews and panels, Netflix is hosting special events, including an outdoor sing-along screening celebrating the anniversary of K-pop Demon Hunters. The film’s cultural impact, combined with its award-winning success, underscores Netflix’s ability to create globally resonant animated content.

The platform will also participate in Annecy’s official competition with entries like Sparks of Tomorrow and episodes from Love, Death + Robots. This competitive presence further solidifies Netflix’s reputation as a major force in animation.

A Strategic Push to Define the Future of Animation

Netflix’s Annecy 2026 showcase is more than just a lineup of announcements. It represents a clear and calculated strategy to position the platform as a global leader in animation. By investing in diverse storytelling, high-profile collaborations, and cutting-edge animation techniques, Netflix is shaping the future of the medium.

Projects like The One Piece and Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 demonstrate the company’s commitment to anime, while films like Ray Gunn and Steps highlight its focus on original storytelling. At the same time, franchise expansions like Ghostbusters ensure that established IP continues to play a key role in its content ecosystem.

This balance between originality and familiarity is crucial to Netflix’s approach. It allows the platform to attract a wide audience while maintaining a strong creative identity. The Annecy showcase serves as a powerful reminder of how far Netflix Animation has come and where it is headed next.

As anticipation builds, one thing is clear. Netflix is not just participating in the animation boom. It is actively shaping its direction, bringing together talent, technology, and storytelling to create a truly global animation terrain.
