Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has revealed another reason why Mindhunter Season 3 never materialized, pointing to David Fincher’s work on the 2020 film Mank. The acclaimed crime thriller ran for two seasons between 2017 and 2019 and has remained one of Netflix’s most frequently requested shows for a potential revival.

During an appearance at The Indian Express’ Express Adda in New Delhi, Sarandos was asked which Netflix project he wished had received another installment. He selected Mindhunter and revealed that a third season had originally been part of the plan.

“We always anticipated there would be a third season,”

Sarandos said, according to The Indian Express.

Sarandos explained that Fincher became occupied with Mank, which meant the filmmaker did not want to split his attention between the movie and Mindhunter. The executive’s comments provide additional context to the series’ uncertain future, although production costs and viewership had already become significant concerns.

Fincher previously explained to The Indian Express that Mindhunter was expensive relative to its audience. He also described the production as an exhausting commitment, making another season increasingly difficult to justify.

Netflix currently lists Mindhunter with two seasons, starring Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv.
