Netflix has secured the rights to an upcoming documentary centered on legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, just ahead of its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. The acquisition marks another high-profile addition to Netflix’s growing slate of music and art-focused documentaries, with the project standing out for its direct involvement from Basquiat’s family.
Directed by Quinn Whitney Wilson and Viridiana Lieberman, the film promises a more intimate and grounded portrayal of the iconic painter. Unlike previous interpretations of Basquiat’s life, this documentary aims to move beyond the myth and focus on the person behind the cultural phenomenon.
A Personal Story Backed by Family Access
One of the defining elements of the documentary is the participation of Basquiat’s family, including his sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux. Their involvement provides rare insight into the artist’s life, supported by never-before-seen archival materials and personal stories.
In a joint statement, Basquiat’s sisters expressed their support for the project, saying they are “deeply proud to see Jean-Michel’s full humanity brought to light with such care, intention and respect.” Their backing adds credibility and emotional weight to the film, positioning it as one of the most authentic explorations of Basquiat’s legacy to date.
The documentary’s approach centers on presenting Basquiat not just as an art world icon, but as a complex individual shaped by his experiences, relationships, and environment. This perspective aims to challenge long-standing narratives that have often reduced him to a symbol rather than a person.

Reframing the Basquiat Legacy
Basquiat rose to prominence as a self-taught artist from Brooklyn, blending graffiti, street culture, and fine art into a style that redefined contemporary art. His work gained international recognition at a young age, making him one of the most influential artists of his generation before his death at 27.
Despite his widespread acclaim, much of Basquiat’s story has been shaped by mythology. The filmmakers addressed this directly, explaining that the goal of the documentary is to separate the public persona from the real individual. In a statement, they noted that his legacy is “undeniable,” but emphasized that “the myth and the man are not one and the same.”
They further explained that the project seeks to explore the “multifaceted and powerful ways he moved through this world,” highlighting aspects of his life that have often been overlooked. By doing so, the documentary aims to offer a more complete understanding of both the artist and his enduring influence.
The film is produced by a collaboration of major production companies, including Boardwalk Pictures, Indus Valley Media, and Interscope Films. It also features a wide range of producers and executive producers, among them NFL star Travis Kelce, adding to the project’s high-profile backing.
Viridiana Lieberman, known for her work on the acclaimed Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor, brings additional credibility to the project. Combined with Wilson’s directorial debut, the film represents a blend of fresh perspective and proven storytelling expertise.
The deal for the documentary was negotiated by WME Independent, further highlighting the level of industry interest surrounding the project before its official debut.
