The current season of My Hero Academia, which began airing in May 2024, has released its first three episodes. These episodes have showcased the Pro Hero Star and Stripe in a significant battle against the formidable antagonist TomurAFO. The early episodes have impressed fans with their pacing and animation, which seem improved compared to previous seasons.
In past seasons, particularly seasons 5 and 6, Studio Bones faced criticism from fans who felt that the studio prioritized side projects, such as the franchise’s movies, over the main series. This perceived neglect led to complaints about the quality of these seasons, with some fans going so far as to label them as subpar or “fake.”
Studio Bones Redeems Itself with My Hero Academia Season 7
Season 5, in particular, which aired from March 27, 2021, to September 25, 2021, faced significant backlash despite high anticipation. This season covered several arcs, including the Joint Training Arc, Endeavor’s Agency Arc, the Meta Liberation Army Arc (My Villain Academia), and the early stages of the Paranormal Liberation War Arc.
Fans had high expectations, especially regarding Shigaraki’s development into the series’ primary antagonist. However, the season’s pacing was criticized, especially during the Joint Training Arc, which was padded with additional flashbacks. Furthermore, the decision to rearrange the arcs—placing the My Villain Academia Arc after the Endeavor Agency Arc—disrupted the narrative tension, disappointing many viewers.
The most significant issue, however, was the animation quality, which did not meet the high standards fans had come to expect. Many blamed Studio Bones for prioritizing the production of the movie “Heroes Rising,” which aired during the release of Season 5, over the main series. This diversion of resources was seen as a major factor in the season’s shortcomings.
As Season 7 unfolds, fans remain cautious but hopeful. The first three episodes have delivered strong performances, particularly in the intense battle between Star and Stripe and TomurAFO, as well as in the revealing of the U.A. Traitor. This positive reception suggests that Studio Bones is focused on the series and not overly distracted by the upcoming Movie 4: “You’re Next,” set to release in August 2024.
While it’s early in the season, the initial episodes indicate a promising direction, with improved animation and storytelling. Fans are optimistic that Studio Bones will maintain this quality and not repeat past mistakes, especially as the series approaches the adaptation of its final war arc.
