Netflix’s Australian Drama Finds a Global Audience

Based on Miles Franklin’s classic novel, My Brilliant Career follows Sybylla Melvyn, an ambitious aspiring writer, guiding expectations surrounding marriage, independence and womanhood in Australia at the beginning of the 20th century.

The series stars Philippa Northeast as Sybylla, alongside Christopher Chung as Harry Beecham. Filming took place across South Australia and at Adelaide Studios with support from the South Australian Film Corporation.

Executive producer Chloe Rickard said adapting the beloved Australian story for a new generation came with significant responsibility.

“My Brilliant Career is such an Australian classic, so it felt both a privilege and a big responsibility for Liz [Doran] and I to remake it,”

she said.

Rickard added that the new adaptation could introduce the story to viewers discovering it for the first time.

“Australian stories deserve to be told, and in this case, told again.”

Showrunner Liz Doran also highlighted the uncertainty at the heart of Sybylla’s story.

“There’s no guarantee of ‘a brilliant career’ for anyone,”

she said.

“She just knows that she has this fire inside of her that has to be answered.”

The series’ early international success arrives amid continuing discussion about the global reach of Australian productions. A recent Screen Australia study found strong interest in Australian screen content both locally and internationally, despite many viewers reporting that local productions can be difficult to find.

Netflix has also expanded the show’s launch with My Brilliant Career: My Way, an original Substack essay series featuring writers and contributors exploring themes connected to the drama.
