Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is scheduled to arrive in North American theaters in February 2027, bringing another chapter of the Gundam SEED story to the big screen. Bandai Namco Filmworks announced the release window and English voice cast during the GUNDAM Showcase 2026 panel at New York Comic Con on October 8, 2026.

The upcoming film serves as a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, the 2024 theatrical release that became the highest-grossing film in Gundam history. It explores events leading into that movie, revisiting familiar characters as they navigate the aftermath of a major conflict and the challenges of establishing peace.

Matthew Erickson will voice Shinn Asuka in the English-language version, with Matt Hill playing Kira Yamato and Sam Vincent portraying Athrun Zala. The announcement also included a teaser visual centered on Shinn and a new trailer, offering fans an early look at the next entry in the long-running mecha franchise.

SEED FREEDOM ZERO STORY FOCUSES ON THE STOLEN STRIKE FREEDOM GUNDAM

The story takes place in Cosmic Era 74, following the collapse of the Destiny Plan, which sought to determine people’s futures through their genetic makeup. Cagalli Yula Athha, representative of the Orb Union, is working to establish a more peaceful world through COMPS, a global peace-monitoring organization.

Shinn joins the organization but remains uncertain about his future. When the Strike Freedom Gundam is transferred to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island, the mobile suit is stolen by unknown individuals. Shinn and his allies must recover the machine before the situation escalates into another conflict. The official synopsis also confirms the return of the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice Gundam, alongside the new GOUF Ignited Custom.

Lunamaria Hawke and Agnes Giebenrath will join Shinn in the story, while Leonard Valway makes his first appearance in an animated work. Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala and Yzak Jule are also confirmed to return.

DIRECTOR MITSUO FUKUDA DISCUSSES THE FILM’S SIGNIFICANCE

Director Mitsuo Fukuda revealed that the screenplay originated during the production of SEED FREEDOM. It was written by Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita and Fukuda himself. Morosawa, Fukuda’s late wife and the franchise’s series composition writer, completed her final work through this screenplay.

In his statement shared by Bandai Namco Filmworks, Fukuda described the project as a connection between DESTINY and FREEDOM. He said the story portrays the characters’ yearnings that Morosawa was eager to explore, expressing gratitude to fans whose support helped bring the film to life.

Japanese voice actor Akira Ishida, who plays Athrun Zala, also highlighted the story’s importance, saying the film would address questions about what happened between SEED DESTINY and SEED FREEDOM.
