Mirai came out earlier this year and it was quite spectacular. It was a masterpiece and it has rightfully earned a Golden Globe nomination. The nominees for the 76th Annual Golden Globes were announced on Thursday. Mamoru Hosoda’s film was nominated in the Best Motion Picture — Animated category. There are a few more films that are nominated in the same category. These are— Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The movie has also been nominated in the Best Animated Independent Feature and Outstanding Achievement for Writing in an Animated Feature Production categories for next year’s 46th Annual Annie Awards. The film was screened by GKIDS and Fathom Events in 700 U.S theatres on November 29, December 5 and the final screening will take place on December 8.
The movie is 100 minutes long ans it opened at #2 at the box office in Japan on July 20. Mirai had its world premiere in May earlier this year. The movie is focused around a family living in a small house. The family has a son named Kun-chan and he gets a little sister named Mirai. However, the boy meets an older version of his sister, who comes from the future.
The movie has been directed by Hosoda at Studio Chizu. He is also credited for the story of the movie. The staff had two talented animators in Hiroyuki Aoyama (animation director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and The Boy and The Beast) and Ayako Hata (key animator on the same films). Yohei Takamatsu and Takashi Omori were the art directors.
The awards ceremony for the 76th Annual Golden Globes will be held on January 6. The most recent anime to receive a nomination was Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Annual Golden Globes back in 2013. It will be interesting to see whether or not Mirai will be able to get the award.
