Millie Bobby Brown discussed Jake Bongiovi’s proposal on The Tonight Show. The 20-year-old actress, engaged to Jon Bon Jovi’s son since April 2023, shared details on Thursday.
“Well, I haven’t told anyone this because there are moments, key moments, but I’m like, ‘Fallon is the best’ and also I think this is too good of a story to not tell,” Brown said. “Basically, Jake and I bonded over diving. We love diving, we got our driving licenses together.”
She added that when they were on vacation, Bongiovi, 21, said,
“Mil, you got to be up at 8:00 a.m., we’re going on a dive.”
“I was like, ‘8 a.m., dive?’ … And he’s telling me, ‘We’re going to the same spot we usually go to,’ ” Brown continued. “I’m like, ‘It’s boring, let’s go somewhere new.’ He’s like, ‘No, we have to go to this spot,’ ” she added.
Upon reaching the location, the Stranger Things star described how they submerged many meters underwater.
“He gives me like a shell and I like, turn it over and it’s a ring,” she recalled. “And I like, looked at him and he was like,” Brown said as she recreated his facial expression and the bubbles due to Bongiovi being unable to talk underwater.
Raising a thumbs up, she said, “This means, ‘up,’ ‘I want to go up.’ So that would technically mean, ‘No, I don’t want to marry you, I want to go up.’ ”
“So I was like okay,’” Brown explained as she did an “okay” hand symbol. “And I think it was underwhelming, but we freaked out.”
“Anyways he puts the ring on my hand and as I go to show him the ring falls off my finger, plummets like, so fast, it was like a cinematic movie,” she said, adding, “Jake threw himself, like so deep, like the diver was like, ‘You can’t do that, like your ears … literally your brain will explode.’ ”
Millie Bobby Brown elaborated, stating that Bongiovi dramatically plunged into the water, executing a “cinematic grab,” retrieving and saving the ring. She emphasized that this act reflects his character, expressing confidence that they will always support each other, ensuring that neither will falter.
As they surfaced from the water, Bongiovi seized the moment to ask for her hand in marriage. Brown recounted her affirmative response, followed by Bongiovi revealing his prior attempt to procure her mother’s ring for the proposal, thwarted by her mother’s apprehension about potential mishaps underwater.
Nonetheless, Bongiovi proposed with a different ring underwater, later presenting Brown with her mother’s ring aboard the boat.
“So when we got up on the boat he was like, ‘This is your mom’s ring and I got it from your parents,’ ” the Enola Holmes star recalled. “And it was very magical and his parents were there and we just looked so disheveled coming out from a dive.”
Brown and Bongiovi’s romance rumors began in June 2021 when he posted a selfie with her on Instagram, captioned “bff <3.”
